A pupil of Corelli, Castrucci (1679-1752) was the leader of G.F. Handel's opera orchestra for 22 years. He appears to have been a fine composer as well.

Along with the likes of Wilma Lipp and Rita Streich, Köth was a hugely popular light soprano of the 1950s and 60s in european opera houses. She carved herself a niche out of Mozart roles such as Despina, Konstanze and the Queen of the Night.

None of the composers on this disc is known to me. « the works on this album are tonal, romantic and colourful, often evoking the rhythmic vitality of the Venezuelan countryside, towns and cities.« (from the liner notes).

1) The Venezuela CD is a nice one.
2) Do not ever, ever listen to Köth's recording of Esultate Jubilate. The vibrato is so bad I am surprised they ever released it: she sounds like a billygoat.

Santa Cruz de Pacairigua is a masterpiece, I think a Latin version of American in Paris.

I ordered Wagner's Meistersinger on Blu-ray!  I ordered it as part of a larger order (free shipping). This cost 25.30 euros to me which is not bad for an opera Blu-ray.

A superb production, scenically and musically... Great choice!

Beethoven String Quartets, Calidore

Couldn't resist the $13 price for lossless downloads of the complete cycle.
Formerly Scarpia (Scarps), Baron Scarpia, Ghost of Baron Scarpia, Varner, Ratliff, Parsifal, perhaps others.

With the divine Anne Schwanewilms as Eva ... 😍

Furtwängler's Brahms - or one of them: he made many recordings of the symphonies with as many orchestras, all different in one way or another.

A few seconds of her Ô Ma Lyre immortelle and I was hooked. Hopefully the rest is as good as that short extract. It's a mezzo-sopano chestnuts recital, with 2 unknown arias thrown in.

For me Erika Koth was the best coloratura soprano that ever roamed this world.

are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

She didn't get very good reviews for these perfomances, and did not return to the Green Hill in the subsequent summers. Still, on DVD, I fnd her great, and far superior to Emily Magee, whom I saw live in this production in 2018.

I too find Anne Schwanewilms a singer of the highest rank!  :) Unfortunatey, the one time I saw her live, she was quite ill, and only sang three of Strauss's Four Last Songs on the programme (she omitted, after agreeing it with the conductor David Afkham in a brief excahnge mid-concert, Beim Schlafengehen, and apologized to the audience at the end). A pity...

I find Schwanewilms quite magnificent in the Salzburg Festival production of Schreker's Die Gezeichneten. Her characterization of Carlotta is touching, vulnerable and strong and pure of voice - just what the role demands.

Once upon a time I had a Furtwängler phase... :D For me, generally speaking, his Brahms symphonies didn't work, with performances feeling uneven, unbalanced. But IMO the '51 recording of the 1s symphony with the NDR, is (literally) exceptional.

BTW What label is that? Never seen that before!

Was going to let this pass, but like Corboz's Baroque box so much, and price on this one became so reasonable, I decided to pick it up as an early xmas present for myself...
It's all good...
