Quote from: Mookalafalas on November 29, 2025, 06:11:29 AMWas going to let this pass, but like Corboz's Baroque box so much, and price on this one became so reasonable, I decided to pick it up as an early xmas present for myself...

For boxing day certainly. :)
Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

André

A Timofeï Dokshitzer bonanza. Dokshitzer was the Russian Maurice andré, a trumpetist of formidable tone and limitless lung power. Merkelo has been principal with the Montreal Symphony since 1995. I've heard him many times in concert but never in a soloistic capacity.

The Arutiunian concerto is a fine piece, its cadenzas are by Dokshitzer. The Weinberg concerto was commissioned and premiered by Dokshitzer. As trumpet concertos go, this is the 20th century equivalent of Haydn's concerto: a landmark and a masterpiece. The Shostakovich is played with Timofeï Dokshitzer's expansion of the trumpet part.

2-disc set, with a particularly strong Fauré representation (the two sonatas and an assortment of small pieces).

In a rather odd bit of pricing, the DVD version of Christmas Eve is on sale for $21.99, while the CD version (even the cover image is the same) is on sale for $26.99.

I have very little Xenakis in my collection. This CD includes an early version of Metastaseis...

Some vintage Stravinsky from the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. The composer conducts (in 1952) Oedipus Rex (with Cocteau as narrator) and Scènes de ballet, and André Cluytens leads Le Rossignol in French (a live performance that preceded the studio recording of that same year —1955–). This series of historic recordings from the legendary Parisian theatre, released by the now defunct Montaigne label, was beautifully produced.

Goffredo Petrassi's arrangements of popular songs from the Roman countryside. I didn't even know this existed...

Piano quintets by Castelnuovo-Tedesco (from before his forced departure from Italy) and Luigi Perrachio (1883-1966), a composer whose name was completely unknown to me until now.
