For one thing, they literally have me headaches.
I can see this, actually. Listening to his earlier works can be like looking at a holograph, where the image keeps changing depending on how you look at it. And the later works have this M.C. Escher feel to them. Doesn't the first minute of the piano concerto make you think of a geometrically-impossible never-ending staircase?
Beethoven's Op. 133 -- A fugue so bad that even Beethoven himself called it "Grosse".

I had to see what all the fuss was about.

Woo-hoo!
My sentiments exactly  8)

Listening to Symphony of Psalms  (Alleluia) now, this is indeed quite an improvement over the Boulez/DGG recording.  :)

I've only listened to some bits and pieces so far and I'm liking it very much. His writing is bold, encompassing the monumental and the intimate and at times it seemingly has the aura of late Beethoven. I also like Vol.2, which I already own. Will come back to you with more detailed impressions!

I watched this documentary via YouTube earlier this year and really enjoyed it. Thought it was good enough to pick up a hard copy of it and watch it on a proper setup at home.

Yeahh, me too  ::). And they shipped it right away, so there's no turning back.

I listened to Harnoncourt play the 40th in Amsterdam many years ago. The bevy of repeats in the Finale confounded me. When I thought it was over, it was starting again -and agaaain... ???
