I was sorely disappointed with the Freiburg Barockorchester version of symphonies 3 and 4. no legato, a dry, percussive sound, an asthmatic way with the phrasing. IOW very little affection for the lovely melodies. Hopefully Van Immerseel's way with the music is more alert to the beauties of the writing.

I love it! :) (Immerseel set) Don't think you will be disappointed.
In fact, though I think his Beethoven set is really, really good, I think Schubert comes even more natural to Van Immerseel.

It's a very great recording imo. Ranks easily among the best of my collection!

I already have zillions of recordings of these, but after listening to a few favorites they sounded -- and I hate this description -- dated.  So I wanted a really up to date recording, and this has gotten some very good reviews.

Holliger's Schumann cycle is shaping up to be my 'reference' (for an 'alternative', I waver between Goodman and Ticciati) though I have yet to hear vol. 3 with the 1851 Fourth and Cello Concerto. He conducts these works with incredible warmth and tenderness, a wind player's phrasing, and a complete lack of mannerisms. When taking this as a recommendation please bear in mind that I am mildly insane and severely obsessed with Schumann's piano works.

A snyprrr recommendation, arrived today: the Zapolski Quartet playing Shostakovich 2 & 8.

The new erato

Despite the crashing Norwegian Krone, and despite the fact that I already have the basson concertos disc included in this set, at £13 at europadisc this was simply just a too good deal to miss:

This has been lingering on my wish list forever, and there suddenly was... :D

And this Oistrakh set because of sentimental value: listened as a teenager a billion times to the Bruch concerto on LP, but it never was reissued.
Last week for some reason I checked after many years, and bingo.... :)

"first release on CD"  Yes, but that was already in 2008! ??? :(  I missed it only by 6 years... :P

Hope you find one new for under $4, like I did.  8)

I surprised myself again... Well not so much surprised myself (even if I had forgotten about this order) than got surprised by Rhenania
http://rhenania-buchversand.de/
They must be the last company on earth to trust customers sufficiently to send them orders before they pay. When I saw this option I just thought "well, let's see what that does". I received it, and I still have to pay by bank transfer (which is free of any fee between European accounts).

Pro Arte Quartet plays Haydn (7 CD on Fono/Strings): €14
Suske Quartet plays Beethoven Complete Quartets (Brilliant, 7 CD): €9,99
Cuarteto Latinoamericano plays Villa Lobos (Brilliant, 6 CD): 5€

Total: €44 shipped

I guess this qualifies as a SDCD.

There are a few other items not to miss, I'll post them on http://bons-plans-classique.blogspot.fr/ tomorrow.

I can vouch for the excellence of the Villa Lobos, although I have it in the Dorian box.

Ooooh, I knew this was only a matter of time.  I look forward to hearing about it.  I'm still holding firm in my post CDCDCD phase.  Still, that is one I would love to sample from.
It's all good...

Ha ha! Well, the reason I ordered that one (Solti 2) was that I liked Soltissimo 3 so much!!!    :) :) :D
In terms of the production it is identical to the larger Korean Westminster sets with original jackets and inside plastic sleeves. Very nicely done. Beyond the physical quality I (so far) find Solti's renditions very enjoyable. Lots of warhorses and overlaps in terms of the repertoire, but that is the nature of the game.  I think you will like these at one point in time, Al.

Soltissimo 4 is (amazingly) appearing on the horizon, but I think I will hold out on that one (for now..).

This looks a very good deal to me, 10 cd's for 30 euros for a limited time. Anyone to enlighten me about these recordings?

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.
