Thanks for the heads up, Moonfish. I ordered the Delius-Howells-Hadley set !

Just bought:

Dohnanyi is definitely not a new name for me as I've enjoyed Bamert's series of the composer's orchestral music on Chandos, so I look forward to hearing Falletta's performances. Of the works on both of these discs, the Violin Concerto No. 1 is a completely new work for me.

I have seen the Madetoja on this board more than once recently and was intrigued by it so I have now purchased it....

Hope you will enjoy it! I bought these CDs in a special Chandos outlet in Prague, in 1991 or something, and I vividly recall the Summer I played them. I still love Madetoja's Second and Third dearly for their lyricism, unlike anything found in Sibelius IMHO. (Indeed, but I've confessed it here before, I play Madetoja and Melartin more than I do the austere godfather himself).  :-X
... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

Thank you for that. That is a very pleasant association you have with the purchase of that set which would make it a somewhat diferent experience over merely buying it on line. I have not heard it yet but I was intrigued by the small amount of research that I did after coming across it here and I am certainly looking forward to hearing it, not least to compare his sound world to that of the "austere godfather" as you so eloquently put it.

That Ligeti set is tempting ... but so much Ligeti around by now, and so little of it yet listened to.

Anyhow, a parcel with some Mirare discs arrived the day before yesterday:

I know what you mean - I have too much music to listen to already! :o
When I browsed the set again today I noticed there was only 1 left on Amazon UK so that made me reconsider..

Well, I have the Teldec, Wergo, and most recently the DG Ligeti sets plus the Aimard piano music disc (that is in the Sony set, I assume), so ... and some more of course, PatKop doing the violin concerto, stuff from Darmstadt, the Ardittis, Kim Kashkashian ...

Kim Kardashian does Ligeti?! :o ;D

If you already have DG, Teldec, and the 3rd (Aimard) disk from the Sony (not to mention all the other stuff you listed) then it probably isn't worth getting the whole Sony box, especially if you aren't sure if you like Ligeti yet. In fact, I only have the DG, Teldec, and Aimard and I am perfectly happy (and you all know how I feel about Ligeti!).

Arrived yesterday: trumpet babes! Thanks to david johnson for posting a link to Tine Thing's Hummel Concerto Andante in the Top 10 most beautiful thread.

Thanks! Actually having bought the Teldec and Wergo sets way early into my classical journey (which is not well into its third year), I didn't want to get the DG either, but the price was so enticing recently, I went for it still. Don't plan to pick up the Sony box though, that's for sure. Two of the Wergo discs were in the library of my school and I copied them onto tape back then (15-20 years ago) and listened to that stuff a few times, without really getting anything much, but fascinating it was for sure!

Latest purchase :):

Nice Conor!  :) It reminds me that I have so much to listen to in terms of Britten (well, everything really.. ???). Are these recordings included in the mega Decca set that was released last year?
