Pretty neat haul, erato. I need to revisit that Fernstrom. I remember it being pretty good (if memory serves correctly). The Guarnieri is awesome. His Symphony No. 6 made quite an impression on me when I first heard it many years ago.

Somehow I avoided this 2-CD set until now:

I skipped buying the other issues of this famous set for the simple fact that I liked this cover art much better than Klemperer's face. :D

Also bought:

Klemperer conducting some of my favorite Strauss works could never be a bad thing.

Actually, $52 at the brick and mortar shop in town.  It would be foolish to resist...
It's all good...

Arrived this morning: Overtures and Violin Concertos (Nos. 1 & 5) by Kalliwoda (1801-1866).

Let's hope so. Worth a try at the price though I've found Antheil very variable in what I've heard before (not much).

The symphonies are an entirely different matter from, say Ballet mécanique; but very well written, and I like them.  (I should revisit them . . . .)

It's about time to have F. Couperin's Les Nations.  0:)

By an interesting coincidence, I heard La Piémontoise at a concert on West 80th Street this past Saturday evening.  Cracking good stuff.

Nos 1 & 6 certainly were entertaining!

Yeah, the old "Klemperer edition" looks somewhat dour (I have the Wagner on two single discs from a later one with reddish/pinkish covers), but I have never seen that nice double set. The cover is a detail from a great painting by Altdorfer (which is surprisingly small in reality, one would think that it was as big as a wall, but it's about 4x5 ft)

Beautiful stuff, both. I have the same Fernström disc, but a different one for the Sjögren sonatas. I should revisit the Norholm concerto (I have a different one here as well). For a time he was a favourite of mine among scandinavian composers.

The photo isn't the sharpest I've seen, but I wouldn't say that the blurry quality is a result of the photo being out of focus, rather than (perhaps unintentional ;) ) motion blur...

Yes, hands trembling with anticipation at the thought of ripping the shrink-wrap off...

I got this one about two weeks ago, in the same old grey cover. I think I once read that Czechoslovakia was the only Eastern bloc country that had a CD manufacturing plant in the late 1980s. There were digital CD recordings produced also in East Germany or Hungary of course, but they had to be manufactured in Czechoslovakia.

I have the Sjøgren sonatas on LP, but haven't heard them for years. The Fernstrøm quartets on a Naxos disc are quite good IIRC.
