I envy him for another reason: he has the time to listen to lots of music.  At work, that is impossible for me, and at home the family has its demands.  On that list, there is close to 100 hours of music.  If you do 3 hours a day, that's 30 days.  Whaouh !!!

This is the purchasing thread. Not everything on here makes it on to the listening thread.

Just bought:

Totally unfamiliar works for me, though I remember hearing the String Quintet (and enjoying it) a year or two ago. This is supposedly 'the best' recording of these chamber works.

The Quintet in particular is wonderful, especially the gorgeous slow movement and the playing throughout is of the highest standard. You should enjoy it  :)

I don't think I have the Archibudelli, but this was one of my first Bruckner CDs and the performance is by no means shabby.

Some people can listen at work, during commutes, don't have demanding families or other hobbies. Or work only part-time, are retired etc.
ca. 20 hours of listening per week is a lot but it is not completely unrealistic: 2 hours/workday and 5/day at the weekend.

The Bruckner quintet is great, the quartet is a rather early "study" work and not even close (it was only discovered and performed in the 60s, I think).

This came in today:

A terrific composer. I have 7 discs of orchestral works (spectacular natural wonders pictured in sound and other runic sagas in music). I recently heard the last movement of his second quartet, in which Leifs laments the loss of his daughter. Tears are pictured as pizzicati in startling fashion. This sold me to the concept. I trust the whole disc will be satisfying.

Jón Leifs is a composer that I definitely intend to explore soon.

The first slip-up took about 6 days, after that there were only 2 to 3-day intervals, then sometimes it was even less than that.

I am revoking my promise to count up his purchases at the end of December, because on current rates the final count will be over 100.

Wow! That's a lot of purchases you made, orfeo. ;) ;D I suppose I should never make a declamation like "I'm done with buying CDs until next year." It only gets me into more trouble. :)

Thanks guys. Jeffrey, I was considering that Fine Arts Quartet Naxos release, but that L'Archibudelli was dirt cheap ($4) and I had read some great reviews on it, so I jumped on it.

Decided to buckle down and get Sarge's favorite Seventh.

I actually have at least half of this set...but not the Fourth or the Seventh.

My resolve to not buy anything for the rest of summer didn't even last a week.  The Chochieva discs and the Achucarro Schumann landed today, with some Spanish piano music destined for my near future.

I need to give Klemperer's Mahler a listen. I've always read good things about his Mahler performances. As you may or may not know the Bernstein DG set is my favorite complete cycle, how would you rate this partial cycle, Jeffrey?

What I've heard of it
2 good but not great
9 very good, but not among my top tier.
DLvdE very good
Lieder good but not great

This was an effective way of getting 4 and 7 which I do not have.
The Ninth btw is coupled with the best Strauss Metamorphosen I know of, if you get the GROC issue.
