Next week, we will have a family vacation I had planned. The reason for the vacation is because my parents are getting old. The can still walk but gingerly. It won't be long before they can't really go anywhere anymore. I want to take them on one last vacation, and with the whole family--my parents, Vanessa and I, with little Kimi. I picked a small town in Southern China where I had lectured a few times. I love the small town atomsphere, and the old culture. I bought a Guqin from there last time. We will take it easy, with a very easy schedule. One day will be in the town itself, going to a couple of tea houses, Guqin music house, a caligraphy house... Then we will spend one day in a village close by, and one in aother village in the mountains. I was assured that my parents won't have much to walk or climb since they have prepared transportation for us.

I have cancelled all my other engagements until I have completed this vacation. I am so looking forward to this. I know it will be something that makes my parents happy.
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

Excellent, Paul. I hope you enjoy your vacation. :)

Relish that vacation.   Have the Guqin players been alerted to the fact that Empress Kimi will expect them to perform some Beethoven? :P

It will be Mahler but he's also expected to sing Songs of the Wayfarer while playing the piano! Kimi will only provide two notes (Heya!)

Completely tangential question: have you ever heard the recording of DLvdE sung in Chinese (by the Singapore Symphony, IIRC)?

The photographs you will be able to post for us when you return will no doubt be fabulous.

It would be a disaster in Chinese, I believe, because the German translation of the Chinese poems are more like re-written poems. A poem that is 4 lines ended up more than 20 lines. They have to be translated back into Chinese completely unrecognizable from the original, not to mention not close to the quality of the eternal poetry that everyone here knows.
