I think that is the root of the problem for many folks. They just want someone (everyone!) to agree with them, and then everything will be alright. Of course, that never happens.... ::)

Reading through this thread has been a cathartic experience.

"They [melancholy thoughts] will have centred on the precariousness of human fortune, the vanity of status and reputation, indeed the fragility of human existence. To make music out of this emotional attitude is at once plausible and implausible. Plausible, because music, as a virtually sympathetic art of sensations, is a highly appropriate medium to articulate feeling, and because it has been considered since time immemorial as the only true means of soothing, indeed curing melancholy." - Melznie Wald-Fuhrmann
Translation: Charles Johnston (from the booklet to Andreas Staier's new recording "Pour Passer la Mélancolie").

Karl Henning

Call it my opinion, but a virtually sympathetic art of sensations and it has been considered since time immemorial as the only true means of soothing, indeed curing melancholy are perfectly sound. A highly appropriate medium to articulate feeling is a faith-based initiative : )

The only true means of soothing melancholy?   Really?  What about ice cream?

Karl Henning

Ice cream probably has not been so considered from time immemorial.
