Hello!

I am very happy to be posting here for the first time.  What a really wonderful place you all have created.

About me:

I'm 45 and have a life-long passion for music.  Caught the Classical Music bug pretty big time in the mid-late '90's, largely via this recording, heard on the radio:

Still have a great fondness for this album today. . .

I found this forum via a music review on amazon, where the name was mentioned (I forget what recording the review was for).

Lately, my tastes have run largely in the Baroque era and earlier.  As I write this, I am listening to this beautiful recording:

I look forward to seeing you all around the forum!

Good taste there in contrasting pieces.....at least, that is what I think.

Welcome to the forum and do post lots and I hope you enjoy yourself.

Howdy thar, pardner!

Have you expanded to listening to all the Mahler symphonies?

Thank you for the welcome!

Cato - in answer to your question, yes, I have, though at the moment my Mahler collection is limited to Sym. #4 (the aforementioned Lenny), Judd's #1:

[asin]B0000007EB[/asin]

and Boulez's #6:

[asin]B000001GOZ[/asin]

A mixed bag, certainly!  Those last two have just as many detractors as admirers - and I'm firmly in the camp of the later with regards to each. . .  When I first came across the Boulez, it was in a little hole-in-the-wall record/CD shop in suburban Philadelphia many years ago.  The place specialized mainly in punk and hardcore, but there was a great jazz section (Knitting Factory/NYC Downtown stuff) and a tiny Classical/Experimental shelf next to that.  I bought the disc NM for like $.50.  It's been a wonderful friend since; sometimes it speaks to me in just the right way and other times it feels like I'm in a cement-mixer.  I like the contrast.

The Judd has incredible dynamic range.  I understand that the "rear-of-the-hall" perspective is not to everyone's liking, but for me, this one delivers in spades.

After my initial post, I played the Bernstein and enjoyed it very much.  Real passion for me in that one.  Took me back to a wonderful time and place in my life too.  I am certainly curious about acquiring more Mahler, though truth be told, I am leaning heavily in favor of this one right now:

Yes, another #4, but, well, you know HIPster and all that.  Anyway, I do want to give it a shot.

Cheers!

Welcome to GMG.   I have to confess that my two favorite composers are Bach and Mahler, but  they are hardly the only ones I listen to.

I've got the Smithsonian Chamber Players recording of Das Lied von der Erde,  and regretfully, I was underwhelmed by it.   But there's plenty of other choices in Mahler.  The Mahler thread her on GMG is "Mahler Mania, Rebooted",  and chock full of suggestions.

Thank you very much Jeffrey!  I have begun to look through the Mahler thread and yes, as you mention, it is indeed "chock full of suggestions" (very good ones too it seems!).

I also really appreciate your thoughts on the Smithsonian Players recording.

Thanks again for the warm welcomes to those who have posted already.
