I just downloaded and made an account. Where does this music come from? It seems to be playing random music from cds... So if I play anything in winamp, it will know im playing it now? Can someone to an idiot, explain how it works?

Lethevich

It will work with Winamp if you set it to scobble from that (there is a tick box thing somewhere, probably during the installation process). Also make sure that scobbling is enabled by right clicking the client in your systray and seeing it it is checked. Naturally it will only work with things that are tagged, and some things may need to be retagged to make sense with its system (which is geared towards pop music - so composer needs to go into "artist").

How do I retag music? Also if it has a bad tag can I fix it on the website? Yes this seems way annoying for classical music as 1 of my artists is "Handel McGegan" I used to tag my music like this to find it on my ipod.

Véronique Gens – Temerari...Come scoglio - Così fan tutte

lol maybe im just wasting my time with this...how will I fix this?

Lethevich

http://www.mp3tag.de/en/ This is a good app for batch-retagging.

Indeedie, you can only leave it there or remove it. If there is too much to remove manually, you can reset the account (not sure how, I haven't done it before - will be in preferences somewhere).

How come some things I listen to just plain don't show up on last.fm even after I tag them and everything?

There is sometimes a delay (often it can be fixed by closing and reopening the scobbler client). A lot of people talk about some things not showing up no matter what they do, but I've yet to encounter this myself.

I've decided to bump the thread as I am considering joining last.fm. I always wanted to find people who listen to exactly the same music. You never know, maybe your neighbour next door listens to classical and would appreciate having a friend like that  ;D So, please describe your experiences with last.fm - does it really work that way? How do you use it? Are there any features you find useful for discovering new classical music?

Kullervo

I deleted my account about two months ago as I realized it was to a degree controlling what I listened to (e.g. if a certain disc contained a lot of short tracks I wouldn't listen to it as it would have skewed the statistics).

I used to worry about my playlists and how they would appear to someone lurking on it (be it a friend or a stranger), but now that kind of worrying is a thing of the past for me.  True, certain groups may not let you in if multiple musical genres are on listed your page, but the beauty of lastfm is that there are about a million other groups you can join.

Yeah, overall my experience has been a positive one, and I've been able to meet some interesting people and come into contact with some artists/bands/composers that had previously escaped my attention.

I just disable scobbling for short track CDs (opera is the worst). But I consider this keeping the charts as representative rather than forging them, although that's not to say that my charts are a very good indicator of what I listen to, as I also listen off the computer/mp3 player...

But hell, for me it's all about seeing the numbers pointlessly tick up - like an RPG :D
