Ghost of Baron Scarpia

Excellent review Andre. Thank you. I shall be putting on the Rozhdestvensky later. Yes, Maazel's is a great performance, as is his Tapiola.

I assume you mean Maazel Vienna. I actually prefer Maazel Pittsburgh, part of one of my most favorite Sibelius symphony cycles.

Yes, quite right - I should have made it clear. Here it is:

I also have it in this very nicely presented boxed set:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Very true, and to my mind one might also say "essential Sibelius" (in contrast to "popular Sibelius", i.e. Symphonies 2, 5, & Finlandia).

I'd recommend that Maazel disc as starter material for anyone wanting to immediately penetrate the Sibelian core without any preliminaries.

Best to avoid the 6th, I think.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.
