Tidying the garden. Just trying to maintain my own small bubble of order in the chaos of spacetime.

A headlamp went out on my car a year ago, and I replaced both. Now one headlamp is out again. I have to figure out if it is a bad bulb, a bad fuse, an open circuit... Do I waste my time fiddling or waste my money bringing it to a repair shop?

You might try looking in your car's manual to see whether or not they list which *fuse is for which?  Or try googling online.  Other option:  From what I can recall, they (an auto repair shop) can quickly plug in their special machine to check the fuses.

*I suspect then you might be able to get a new fuse at an auto parts store.  It/They probably wouldn't be very expensive.

Good luck!

I did look into fuses, but one person posted that the car comes in so many variations that it is very difficult to get accurate information about which fuse is for what. He looked up the headlights fuse and there was no fuse there at all. I probably will try swapping the bulbs first.

It just seems strange that they would burn out so quickly!  Do you have a good mechanic?  I wonder if there might be a loose or corroded wire or switch with which you turn on your headlights?

Do tell us how you solved your mystery and what the cause of death was.  🕵

The US Open (main draw) started today [Tennis--1 of 4, and last of the year, slams for those who aren't tennis followers = major tennis event].

Tons of matches going on in the early rounds.  Watching...  :)

My landscape light sensor has become overly insensitive. I bought a replacement from Loe's and will try to install it myself.

The sensor controls when my landscape lights turn on. Now, even on a bright day, the lights pop on when it goes into shadow. But it didn't use to be that way. I've already tried cleaning it.

Is the light meant for highlighting a plant/plants or for creating a pathway to the house?  Also, is it solar powered?

Lights plural. It is a network of lights that highlight different trees, bushes, and the house. They serve both landscaping and security. It's not solar-powered, but I have a special line item for a cheap rate from my power company.

Quote from: DavidW on August 17, 2024, 01:43:05 PMI've had it. I'm done. I'm on Linux now.

How's Linux working for you? What distro are you using?

(I've primarily used Linux for about 7 or 8 years. One tip that I recommend is looking up how to set up a compose key [I use right-alt]: it's very helpful for writing accent marks and special characters!)

Sadly, it didn't work out. I had severe issues with the scroll wheel on my mouse. I tried many solutions, but none worked for me. It is sadly a common problem.

When I used Linux in the saintly days of yore, it didn't suffer from such basic issues (though I remember needing to write a config script for a winmodem).

That's a problem that I hadn't heard about, since I only use laptops currently. I've fortunately not run into serious problems yet, and there are features such as the compose key and middle-click to paste that would make it hard to switch away!

The transmission on our 2007 VW Rabbit has been replaced and the car drives smoothly now.

The VW Golf was renamed Rabbit for a couple of years. It's the same car.

I'm remembering driving a friend's VW Sirocco from the Bay Area to his mom's house in Lake Tahoe, back in 1986. It was the most fun l ever had driving, as the car was so much better than my own POS. ::)

Which prompted me to put my proud father hat on and boast about my daughter's Sirocco, which she has rebuilt almost from the tyres up, customised to within an inch of its life, and which now wins awards at car shows:

Although what I'm actually doing is enjoying a rather good pint while packing up camping kit for a week away in mid-Wales.
