It's particularly nice to see a new recording of Korngold's precocious and luscious Sinfonietta, although it would have to be truly outstanding to equal or top the blockbuster recording by the Dallas SO under the great Andrew Litton:

I certainly won't complain about releases like this - but as I mentioned in the British Composers thread, I hope BIS hasn't forgotten about their former allegiance to Nordic music. Especially as there are not many other labels who consistently record music from those countries...

I share your sentiments. It seems that Aho is the most prominent Nordic composer who is featured on that label with relative frequency lately.

I may have mentioned it before (?) but there's a splendid DVD of Schreker's opera Die Gezeischneten ('The Branded/Stigmatized) from the Salzburg Festival. It's one of the most beautiful, fascinating operas I've seen. And that specific production is a gem.

Schreker's operas cannot be appreciated by listening to just an orchestral prelude or overture: he was not a tunesmith, but his ability to create moods, atmosphere and developing characters by musical means rival that of Strauss  and Hindemith. Late/post romanticism at its very best.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!

Yes, the full opera deserves to be heard in its entirety, not only the Prelude (it's quite popular for good reasons, though). I only know the Decca recording of the whole work.

This is still the best recorded and interpreted version of the work (one of my most favourite operas) in my opinion. Many years ago, when DVD-ROM drives were standard in PCs, I ripped the audio from this DVD and put it on CD so that I could listen to it without always having to watch the video (nothing wrong with the production, that's just how good the music-making is).

Anne Schwanewilms is just sublime. All the other roles are very well sung.
