Just had to return for this thread! An American Paris for me, with the Catfish Row Suite a very close second. Will be returning to GMG properly soon hopefully. :)

Nice to meet you, Daniel! :) In case you're wondering, I LOVE MAHLER!!! :D I also love most of the composers on your list underneath your avatar (R. Strauss and Chopin excepted). Tveitt, Glazunov and Bortkiewicz are some of my favorite lesser-known composers. :)

Yup, the various songs were my first thought, and none are here - I voted for An American in Paris.

"Summertime" has become one of America's most iconic songs; reportedly, it beats out "Yesterday" for the title of most covered song ever written.

Here, then, are
My Five Favorite Covers of Gershwin Songs!! In No Particular Order

  • "Summertime": Dr. Michael White (clarinet) and Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Songs of New Orleans, 2005: not on YouTube, scroll down for album link
  • "Summertime": George Benson Quartet, It's Uptown, 1966: Listen on YouTube!!
  • "My Man's Gone Now": Nina Simone, Sings the Blues, 1967: Listen on YouTube!!
  • "Someone to Watch Over Me": Art Tatum, Piano Starts Here, 1968 (sorta): Listen on YouTube!!
  • "They Can't Take That Away from Me": Erroll Garner Trio, Concert by the Sea, 1955: Listen on YouTube!!
  • BONUS HONORABLE MENTION | "Summertime": Al Gallodoro (sax) and Lincoln Mayorga (piano), Gershwin by Grofe, 2010: not on YouTube, scroll down for album link

Thanks, guys! :D I'll be back properly in a few days I reckon! And nice to meet you, kyjo! Glad we share many favourite composers, and that you love Mahler, which is of course the all-important factor! :p
