It occurred to me to make this poll out of part of the core output of these two very different yet related American composers in order to see how much of this forum is familiar with it.

You can listen to Carter's quartets on YouTube but for the complete Babbitt quartets you can go here: https://erikcarlson.bandcamp.com/album/milton-babbitt-string-quartets

Carter I have both the Pacifica and Juilliard cycles, but Babbitt I've never heard. If Amazon is correct,  the Sixth was never recorded, and the Second through Fifth were all recorded separately by different groups, and almost all of them are unavailable.

Maybe time to send a letter to Naxos?

Hollywood Beach Broadwalk

Karl Henning

I've heard all of the Carter quartets, but none of the Babbitt.

All of Carter's (on CD, and in concert), and only the Third by Babbitt.

#5
I've heard all the Carter except the first, and all the Babbitt, most recently I've really enjoyed Babbitt 6.

Archaic Torso of Apollo

I've heard all of Carter's, including #1 live (Pacifica). I didn't even know Babbitt wrote string quartets.
