Indeed, it is the recording of the premiere:

Excellent, gentlemen. I have downloaded them both.

This live Allegro Sostenuto from Ensemble Recherche seems to me to be more successful than the recording - more tension.

And I'll just mention that I've been really enjoying Double (Grido II), in fact I like it more than Grido I! Maybe Lachenmann's most accessible modernist piece.

My single biggest problem with these pieces is that Bernd Alois Zimmermann did all of this far better--and far more disturbingly--in the 1960s.

I'm not used to Lachenmann-as-pale-imitation-of-his-predecessors.

As far as I can see the experimentation with tonality happened as early as 2000, before he had released Grido and Schreiben in fact, with the Sakura variations.

I think the idea is that the listener will find himself reassessing his relation to mainstream music.

Concertini is interesting in this respect.

Listening to a fine reading of Lachenmann's Serynade by Benjamin Powell, pianist of Psappha, the new music group based in Manchester. I believe they are archiving the concert.

Thanks. Miller Theatre has long presented excellent programs of contemporary music. I often attended when living within commuting distance (1990s through 2001).
Delighted to see MT carrying on remotely!

We were probably at some of the same concerts! I agree: Miller does excellent work -- some of the best programming in the city.

I recall a week-long Lachenmann residency at Columbia in 2001. Went to two of the associated (Miller) concerts.

That concert was my first encounter with Lachenmann's work. Afterward, I casually referred to Gran Torso as "a quartet of scratches," which in retrospect was glib, if not far from the truth. But the evening has lingered in the memory, 20 years later (!) as one of those concerts that changes everything that comes in its wake.

Yea! A new Serynade! And a wonderfully French booklet essay - I mean, only the French could write this sort of stuff.

A revised version of My Melodies (dated 2016-23) is being premiered in Munich on the 23rd June. Hopefully audio of this will emerge!

I've forgotten all about this composer. I ought to revisit his ultra-challenging string quartets, which I have on a Mode CD by the JACK SQ.

Go Double (Grido II), 3,2 and 1. Then you'll move from the least challenging to the most exploratory. Double is a version of Grido for string orchestra, IMO very nice indeed.

Wow, thank you. Did not know about Double (Grido II), and sounds like a fascinating concept. And just found it, with what appears to be an exceptional group of players.
