. . . going by what is generally recognized today as "chamber music" - if we throw in the Baroque forms, my list would change, of course.
When, a few months before his death, Rachmaninov lamented that he no longer had the "strength and fire" to compose, friends reminded him of the Symphonic Dances, so charged with fire and strength. "Yes," he admitted. "I don't know how that happened. That was probably my last flicker."

Poulenc, Shostakovich, Faure, Debussy, Ravel, Martinu, Schumann, Bartok, Brahms, Ives, Bax

Five for the moment:

Mendelssohn
Mozart
Beethoven
Schubert
Donatoni

Mendelssohn isn't included in many member's list. Shocking.

Haydn
Boccherini
Takemitsu
Messiaen
Shostakovich

+1 Feldman

I drop in Shostakovich, because sometimes you shouldn't stick to your actual taste. I want to like him.

It is admirable that you keep trying, Henk. :)
Have you heard the Piano Quintet, Piano Trio No. 2, Op. 67, or the PC's?

I have his VC on Naxos. I also have PC 2 by Ogdon / Foster. I think I also have the Piano Quintet, but can't find it. I have multiple perfomances of his string quartets, which I will also try to enjoy. :) On Rdio I can find more of him. Rdio is such a great thing. I will try the Helmchen Piano Quintet they have later.

I love his work, I just like the others in my list better.  He's right after Faure, who produced some very nice stuff in the chamber music category.  I think we'd all like to hang out with Felix - by all accounts, a pretty nice guy.

Also love Mendelssohn, more than Schubert, I always regard them as a couple in succeeding Beethoven. Mendelssohn is more distinctive than Schubert to Beethoven.

Yeah, but that Quintet of Schubert's is just one of the prime pieces of chamber music!  :-)  Looking over the vast output in Mendelssohn's chamber works, tho' - damn, we need 12 in the list!!!!
