I'd preferably like one where the orchestra is whipped into a frenzy at the end of the first movement, and the finale is taken at a broad and spacious tempo, especially the closing bars (ie. slowly).

Hi John,

Bernstein/Sony M3 was the first Mahler symphony I ever heard, and to this day it's my favorite version and my favorite Mahler symphony.  Guess I imprinted on it.
I also like Boulez/VPO and Haitink/RCO.

Hey Joe (pun intended  ;D ). Glad to see you again.

Lenny's Sony M3 is one of my favorites too but...unfortunately?...I imprinted on the Horenstein  ;D ;)

It's my favorite M3, too, Joe. My favorite overall, though, is the M6 from the same series. Both are my imprint versions.

Thanks!  I forgot to mention, last week I heard a performance of M3 on the radio without knowing who it was and found it quite enjoyable.
Turned out it was Tilson-Thomas/SFSO, and it inspired me to revisit the work. And then I came upon this thread!  What are the odds?  ;D

I've been listening to Chailly's Mahler for the last couple of days, and I like his M3 a whole lot. Thanks to those who recommended it. I'm now on his M5.

Chailly's 3rd is excellent. One of my favorites for sure.

I really like the Abbado Berlin M3. The sound brings to mind a wet and slushy spring with a lot of rain (I think of T.S. Eliot saying "April is the cruelest month...").
The great highlight for me is the 4th movement. Anna Larrson's vocal has great control and atmosphere.  All in all, there are nice turns of nuanced playing in each movement that carries me along. There is even a "Brahmsian" feel to the whole timbre (with the exception of chirping woodwinds in some places).

I have an affection for Vaclav Neumann and the Czech Philharmonic with Christa Ludwig

Yes, Chailly's M3 is impressive in each movement. I particularly love the 1st and the 'O Mensch' movements.
