Oh dear....you definitely don't want to be crossing North Bridge if you can possibly avoid it ;D

Well, the alternatives for access to Princes Street are Lothian Road - a bad idea, apparently - or the Mound, which after the HBOS buyout makes me wonder if it'll self-destruct as I'm passing by! :o ;)

If I can approach and enter the Philosophy building without getting nearly spun around by the odd, intermittent gust, that's always a good sign. ;D

This seems almost like a comment on your possible struggles with philosophy!

Mark Twain said; "I never endured a winter as cold as the summer I spent in San Fransisco." But then, I don't think he ever visited Edinburgh.

Last January we crossed the North Bridges when there was almost a gale blowing. Literally, we held onto a bus stop as a metal bin was blown past us. Basically it was a stupid route to take in such weather.

DavidW: Yeah Mike doesn't get angry, he gets even.
I wasted time: and time wasted me.

I've also had something fly past me near the north end of the North Bridge, recently, though I can't even remember what it was. I suppose it's the "avoidance/survival" frame of mind one naturally falls into in this sort of weather, after a while.

Re Philosophy, quite the contrary! It's the wind that's the struggle, more than philosophy is or ever was.

The Philosophy building I mentioned is the newly-built Dougald Stuart building, opposite the McEwan Hall in the northeast corner of George Square, exposed to intersecting currents from the Meadows Walk, Lauriston Place (by extension, through the Potterrow) and Richmond St (thus anything blowing down Nicholson St as well), as well as notoriously-windy George Square itself.

On a rather memorable occasion, walking along from the lecture theatres to the building with a faculty member as we discussed predicate logic, I almost witnessed his (full) cup of copy getting blown off his hand.

The Psychology building, by comparison, is much tamer to approach, if far less exciting as a consequence. ;)

From the Old Town to Princes Street my suggestion would be to go down from the High Street to a lower level by using Cockburn Street(which is more sheltered) and takes you to the railway station just off Princes Street. That is if you don't mind fighting your way through the hoards of emo youths who tend to congregate in that particular street ;D

These congregations were exactly the reason I didn't mention that alternative, though the more I consider it, the more attractive it seems. At least the emo-horde is stationary, and does not make rain go under your umbrella; or your umbrella go over North Bridge, for that matter. ;D

As you correctly point out but were polite enough not to highlight :) avoiding the stationary horde of youths is more likely to be an aspect of such a journey than avoiding their hoards which I suspect they keep well-concealed ;D ;D

Unless their hoards are concealed by their numbers, in which case the two issues would seem to converge. ;)

Dundonnell

That may well be the case :) Best to avoid Cockburn Street at weekends or at times of a full moon ;D

How about the vernal equinox? ;D

(Now that we've gotten through the Winter Solstice, that is.)

Happy Winter Solstice to everyone. No snow here in Texas either, but it's damned cold. No matter, days get longer from here on out, so things will be much better soon.

Poju. Isn't that unusual ???

It was a rainy first day of winter here in NE GA. It's 61 °C right now and it's supposed to rain again tomorrow. I don't see how you Canadians stand the winter. I guess if you were born and raised around it, then you're much more accustomed to it. I don't think I could ever get used to it at all.

Torrential rain and driving winds here in East Sussex, England - but greetings to you all.  :)
