What I was trying to say is that being at a live performance relieves you of this ever escalating "but X plays this note just a little better."

Being at a live performance is an exercise of being in the music in the moment, which is what it is about.

The title of the thread (Beethoven's Piano Sonatas) doesn't distinguish between recordings and live performances - or sheet music for that matter. But we can ask the OP @George what he had in mind.

However he wrote this in the first post of the thread:

I have never heard him perform live.  I have heard recordings of him performing live.  That should be a very simple thing to understand.

Yes, you're right. I didn't think about such a strict distinction. For example, I've listened to some pianists live, whose recordings I've also heard. Sometimes it's hard to tell what influences what.
