"I've seen Alsop live several times, and never thought of her as "butch" or even lesbian, frankly. Short hair, yeah; short person, yeah; but that's about it."

It's also important to note her modesty.  This sentence is right at the top of her website:

"As Alsop faced the cellos and drew from them the most tremendously shaped phrases with every inflection of her baton, you were aware of being in the presence of greatness."   :D

Oh brother. You do realize this is a promotional website created by a marketing firm for the purposes of promoting Marin, don't you? And the quote did not come from Marin herself but from a review in the press.  As someone who has met and worked with Marin on a few occasions, I can say she is extremely generous, humble, communicative, professional, supportive, challenging, artistic, and up against a lot for no reason other than being female.  Latest 2013 American symphony league statistics say only 1% of professional conductors are women so Marin has had to overcome ALOT and has been gracious and supportive along the way mentoring many.

I don't know that much about her, but that quote was (I'm sure) not typed into the webpage by Marin herself. It does seem almost Wagnerian in terms of language and pompousness, though :D .

I'm being too much of an obnoxious feminist

fixed  that for ya!

Really? You're a... feminist> Sooo, you believe women are "better" than men, right? Since, uh, you know, there is no such thing as equality, right? As long as they have all the... excuse me... pussy- there is no equality. Why don't you get that?

Scelsi said he preferred to have women PLAY his music, because of the lack of ego, or something. But since women have had the opportunity to do just as much as men,- let's just say since 1970- apparently it was a man, baby, who wrote 'Brokeback Mountain'- I mean, wtf- am I just waiting for some chick to write a 'Vagina Monologues' Opera? They've had plenty of time to prove themselves, and hey, guess what- no one gives a fff.

Women can't be a father- so there. At least there's one thing they CAN NOT do- EVER. Oh, it feels sooo good that there is something left for the being with a penis, so that he can feel like he even belongs on this planet- oh, but the nu-clear family is a thing of the past-

aye aye Brian- sorry- nothing quite gets me more than when I hear "I'm a feminist" coming out of a man's mouth. Feminism is just Commie claptrap- the destruction of family- women have simply been told what they WANT to hear and they sucked it up like it was an afterbirth. No one told me anything I wanted to hear since WWII.

Currently, I'm somewhat "in love" with this hot, 50s super-dyke. When I first asked her out, I said to myself, hey, don't be a bigot- just cause she has short dykey hair and basically is a cariacature(err) of a dykety-dyke, I just assumed she looked that way. Well, oh boy was I surprised! That was a couple of years ago. Currently, I have broached the subject again- anyhow, my point is is that this woe-man and me are the only smarties in the common group, and she's the only who is interested in things that I am, and I have just gotten to the point where I'm like I think her 'way' is just a political ploy so she can feel superior (and she kinda does)- oh fff-

gaaaah- nevermind

Sincerely, I think I just want to fight cause you said you're a feminist, and I'd simply like you to clarify what you mean by that. I thought that in the 20th century we learned that "-isms" were bad. If you're a Feminist, you MUST be holding another group back from their full potential. It certainly isn NOT an "equality" function (see above- remember, they have all the pussy- NOT FAIR!).

You want to destroy the world so you can feel good about letting the weaker vessel run the show regardless of outcome. It it's a failure (100% likely), you'll just pull the "race card" "gender card" "privivledge(err) card" and say they didn't make it because the mean old penis-holders wouldn't make it easy for them.

aye- did I say that out loud????? :o ???

feminism- oh puh-leeeeeze ::) make me a sammich!!! (something the new liberated ones know nothing about- oh, but wait, we have a new generation of geldings to be the new wimmins whilst the wimmins become amazon-tarzans- oh, please save me brave woman from the sabre toothed banker).

My dad's FOURTH wife was a higher up in the NOW organization. WWWTTTFFF???? I have seen it from the inside, and the inside is ugly!! (btw- she left him for a wimmins- served him right!!).

That's it- cut their clits off!!

I was in a "meeting" once, where someone DARED to claim that all the chicks left when the coke was gone- and the wimmins started a feminist howl as if it weren't the most true thing ever said. Wimmins can't handle one iota of criticism in this post-Feminist world, they are the most entitled entities on the (Western) planet. Men are de facto second class citizens in the arena  of "ball" (just try to assert yourself- ANYWHERE!).

You know- leave the Composing of Great Works of Art to the men, thank you. We'll let you perform out gift to you. Know your role!!

Is there a womans on this site who isn't totally overcome with the "you go girl" schtick? Is there an old fashioned womans here who gets ridiculed as being a "traitor" or something because she isn't one of these new fangled I-can-do-everyhting-at-once overbearing boors?

gaaaaah- stand up for a man once in a while- pantie waist

sorry- talking deep breath

where's that valium?...

Brian... feminist... (shakes head)... Brian/ wtf?- just tell me what "being a feminist" means to you. FFF- I feel like my whole morning's ruined... I know, I'll go put my kkk hood on, that'll make me feel better! Oh, who else can I hate? mm mm... well, there's always the katamites... brown people... fat people... rednecks... soccer moms... scared men... bullies... victims...

How do you not all suck? What have any of you people made better?

She's probably the second most hyped conductor in the world. You don't think some of that hype is precisely because of her sex?
I'm not complaining. I think it's great to get away from the stuff image classical has, and appealing personalities like Dudamel or Alsop on display is good for music. But she's not a hot item today in spite of her sex.

Really now? Do you perhaps live in Bournemouth or next to a Naxos distribution center? Dudamel, Nezet-Seguin, Gergiev, Rattle, Barenboim, maybe Nelsons or Petrenko? According to a group that tracks performances given around the world (PDF link to the data), Marin Alsop was the only woman in the top 100, and she was ranked 70th (but some of her concerts were left out of the data for some reason, so she might be closer to #50).

Shall we debate what "hyped" means?

Shall I repeat the names Nezet-Seguin, Rattle, Dudamel, Nelsons, etc.

By all means do cite Dudamel in a discussion of the second most hyped.

I did a quick google of mentions on CNN in the past year just as a rough proxy measure.

Dudamel 126
Alsop 69
Rattle 10
Nezet-Seguin 2

Well, of course, CNN would not hype Rattle much.  You'd have to read the UK press for that.

If you google the exact phrases "Simon Rattle" and "Marin Alsop", they have about the same number of hits.

Alsop is definitely well known and conducts a lot of concerts, but among the general classical music listening public she's probably more than a bit underrated. It's not easy to overcome the disadvantages of being (a) alive and (b) not from one of the cool European countries.

For "hype" compare Karajan or Solti or Boulez or Celibidache or Mravinsky. Or pretty much anyone else who got their own box set.
