Well, that article seems to suggest that by the mid-80s, New Wave had lost its characteristic, and devolved back into "more conventional pop."

Which, again, seems to support the OP's thesis that New Wave's center of gravity was the late 70s.

In a way, New Wave never stopped.

In the Dutch Pop Encyclopedia for instance, the term 'New Wave' has changed into 'Indie', and it goes from Talking Heads to Editors and Interpol.

"Indie" is such a loose term.

1977 San Francisco, I think of as the New Wave-Punk period . Mabuhay Gardens. I was there with a paper clip hanging from my ear.

Nice! Although I was more "new wave" than "punk", I did like some punk bands: The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, The Damned... Probably the more melodic ones.

Dave, I am astounded that you've omitted one of the (for me) quintessential New Wave outfits: Squeeze.

Of those four, Elvis Costello. The man reinvents himself like noone else. And the words sound like they were written by an educated person instead of the so many bands that write songs for second graders.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Sorry.  Rock is not for educated persons.  And that is why it is fantastic.

I should vote for Devo, my homies but I have go with my love:

Sarge
the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."
