The Basement Tapes. Why? Because it's The Band  8)

"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Talking Heads blow the competition AWAAAAAY...!!!

Or not.

Anyway, I voted for them.  0:)

Talking Heads. I don't really know why, but I never got into the Basement Tapes. Hated Captain Beefheart.

mn dave

Oh, why? Because it's so much cooler than the other two. Dylan is just rehashing the Twenties and Captain Beefheart is a loon. ;)

I like or love these albums.

I like the relaxed, organic boot-leggy feel of The Basement Tapes, and as Sarge said, it's The Band.

I love Safe As Milk, which I describe as avant-blues/rock. It is one of my favorite Beefheart albums, a great debut.  Relatively straight-ahead, and featuring a young Ry Cooder on guitar, this is more accessible than his later music and actually even contains some hooks.  Anyone interested in getting their feet wet with Captain Beefheart should start here.

But my favorite of the three and my choice here is Remain In Light, probably one of my top 10-20 favorite albums. From the killer combination of funky, percussive trance-like rhythms that appeal to both head and body, Enossification, and Adrian Belew, to the final drone of The Overload, this is the Heads finest hour.

"Music can inspire love, religious ecstasy, cathartic release, social bonding, and a glimpse of another dimension. A sense that there is another time, another space and another, better universe."
