Here's what to do: List your top 10 jazz albums. If it's a set of CDs that has more than one disc, then each disc counts toward the total (for example, if you choose a 3-disc set, you only have 7 picks remaining). I will remain neutral and tally things up on the evening of May 8th.

One list only, please. If you want to change it before the deadline, please modify the original list posted.

Well, uh... can I choose my ten favorites instead?

The title is tongue in cheek.

"List your top 10 jazz albums."

But if it's a single album which covers two discs, it counts as one, right?  That's what I'll presume....

Just voting with my ears, and in alphabetical order:

Chick Corea, My Spanish Heart
Miles Davis, Bitches' Brew
Miles Davis, Ascenseur pour l'échafaud
Eric Dolphy, Out to Lunch
Charles Mingus, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
Thelonious Monk Quartet, Misterioso
Thelonious Monk Quartet, Underground
The Thelonious Monk Orchestra at Town Hall

2 discs counts as 2 votes.

Alphabetical (and after only 18 months of serious jazz listening, so this list is very early/provisional)

  • At Carnegie Hall, Dave Brubeck Quartet
  • Concert by the Sea, Erroll Garner Trio
  • Kind of Blue, Miles Davis & Co.
  • Money Jungle, Duke Ellington with Charles Mingus and Max Roach
  • Monk's Music, Thelonious Monk with Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, Gigi Gryce, Art Blakey, etc.
  • Nina Simone Sings the Blues
  • Tijuana Moods, Charles Mingus & Co.
  • Time Further Out, Dave Brubeck Quartet
  • The Witch Doctor, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers
My favorite album is Brubeck Quartet at Carnegie Hall, which is a 2CD set (thus my list only has 9 albums).

Honorable mentions:
- Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with Thelonious Monk
- Bill Evans Trio at the Village Vanguard (3 CDs)
- It's Uptown (George Benson Quartet)
- Mingus Ah Um

All right.  I didn't like making the cuts, but . . . he made me do it . . . .

Miles Davis, Kind of Blue
Cannonball Adderley, Somethin' Else
Bill Evans, Everybody Digs Bill Evans
Dave Brubeck, Time Out
John Coltrane, A Love Supreme

Cannonball Adderley, Somethin' Else

I've only listened to this once (my copy just arrived), but it will probably soon be fighting for a place in my top ten. On the other hand, I decidedly prefer Time Further Out to Time Out, and even listen to Time in Outer Space more than the original album.
