A recording I contributed to the project was selling on Amazon.com for $195.84 at the time ...

It's actually available in a 2-CD set (Vanguard Classics) from $15 used/$22 new, at time of writing. (And in MP3 format from ClassicsOnline.) Though that's not in print either, so I imagine the prices aren't going to go down.

I am pretty clueless about all things strings-only-chamber-music, am not sure I'll have enough time at hand, but I'd be interested for sure!

I'll participate. But if you decide to give up before the end, could you send a final message identifying the versions on which we've voted? Someone abandoned one of these threads, and the only clue we had to identify different versions was the timing. Thanks.

amw

Don't worry, I promise not to abandon you guys! $:) I don't have anywhere particularly pressing to be in July & August (which is probably when this will happen) but as a failsafe I can leave a text file identifying the versions with a trustworthy person, with instructions not to look at it unless I've been afk for more than three weeks or something like that.

Brahmsian

OK, I'll play, just keep in mind I am still in the Bruckner 6 blind comparison.  I'll participate though, whenever you decide to begin.

Finally, as far as format, I think the third movement in the first round is a really good idea. Especially because the contrasts are so powerful - this covers the entire range of the piece (and I'd argue as a D956 junkie, the entire range of human emotion?).

If this is the case, I may ask for links to all groups!   :D

If the blind comparison is going to happen, then I am interested.  This is probably on of my favorite piece of chamber music that is not a string quartet.  :)

amw

Right... so I've got all the recordings I plan to use, now, and the only question is whether people will actually participate! Looking at starting in a couple of weeks, depending on who signs up.

The first round will be the exposition of the first movement x 8. (~40 minutes of music to listen to... more if you want to do multiple groups) The scherzo will appear (complete) in round two, x 6 (~60 minutes), followed by the adagio in round three x 4 (~60 minutes). The top six scorers across all previous rounds will then be presented in their entirety! Maybe. (...~300 minutes... participants will get extra time for that one)

I'll work out the kinks as we go along I guess.

320kbps MP3s, zipped, uploaded to the internet (most likely mega.co.nz which seems to offer the fastest up/down speeds). Links will be sent out via PM.

If it goes like Monkeyfrog Greg's Bruckner comparison, GMG will vote off Archibudelli in the first round!
