John's Isle Of Mirrors

Hello, it's John here. I'm not a composer as in writing music down on notation paper, but merely a 'songwriter.' I'm hoping over the next few months to add something to this page as I've been playing the guitar for 21 years or so now. I would like to upload a recording of my dad and I performing a piece we both created through improvisation titled Painless Objections. It's a 21 minute 'suite' if you like. I might just make a YouTube page and post videos from there to here.

I don't know it's all kind of up in the air right now. Hopefully, something will come together.

Okay, so I started a Sound Cloud page and I uploaded that short guitar improvisation from 2003 for those that want to check it out. My next upload will be the 21 minute piece my dad and I wrote around 2001 titled Painless Objections.

I would like to talk a minute about guitars, effects, and amplifiers:

Guitars: My guitar of choice in most cases is a Fender Stratocaster, but lately I've been playing an Ibanez SA-160 which I've really been enjoying. I have also playing Les Pauls and an SG in the past.

Effects: I mainly use a Boss ME-50 multi-effects board these days going through an old Alesis Microverb (even though it's 16-bit, it still has a gorgeous hall reverb setting that I've fallen in love with). I used to have a pretty good size pedalboard with an assortment of various effects pedals, but I've found pretty much all the effects I need with the Boss ME-50 and it takes up less room, which is a definite plus for me.

Amplifiers: This is all over the map, but to make a long story short, or list in this case, I have come to really love this old Randall amp (don't remember the model number right now), but it has a beautiful, warm sound even though it's a solid state amplifier.

Listened to both tracks. Very enjoyable stuff and very mellow throughout. Nice to just hear the arrangement of two guitars without once ever thinking that it could use drums or bass.

Matte black, I would have a bigger, "fuller bodied" ;) one. Wanna play such a guitar later, making "artists art". :)

Thanks, Greg. Coming from another guitarist, it means a lot to me. I actually have an early incarnation of Painless Objections that I'm thinking of uploading. This version lasts around 15 minutes with a different lead guitar improvisation from my dad.

I’ve become increasingly interested in the idea of writing for film even if it’s for a non-existent one. ;) Basically, the idea behind this particular piece is a monster awakens from a century slumber to feed again. The beginning of the piece is characterized by the monster waking up and looking at its surroundings and then it begins to go on the prowl and the scene ends with it arriving in a suburban neighborhood.

The monster looks something like:
