Well, I am almost on summer break and always like to focus on a certain genre or run of classical music for a couple of months.  So, this summer it will be piano concertos by Russian composers.  Oh, I know that there are many top-shelf compositions, and I would like to know your favorites.  But I also want to know specific recordings you enjoy, which of the pc's do you have the most of, and are there any recent recordings that have your attention.  Heck, I would like to even know any that you have  seen performed live.  So, let the floodgates open. :)

In terms of Russian piano concertos I admit that I am not that seasoned. I probably need your summer project....   ::)
Anyways, in my mind the concerto that always appears for the Russian realm is Rach 2 performed by Richter/Wislocki (which I am sure you already know well). It has a special place in my own musical journey....

Let this Texas wildcat out its cage tonight and will have great difficulty putting it back in.  Lapping up every note of the Rach as I type.  Reiner and Chicago really add a nice backdrop here....you know, that Reiner sound.

A pretty heavy interpretation but highly recommended nonetheless.

How about Gilels with all three of Tchaikovsky's piano concertos?

The box also contains Rach 3 (Paris Conservatory/Cluytens) as far as Russian piano concertos go ... and some other fine things.

Béroff & Masur's Prokofiev cycle is excellent.
Hamelin's recording of Shostakovich PC''s & Shchedrin PC No. 2 is great stuff, too.

From Georgia: Otar Taktakishvili: concerto nr 2 ( he wrote at least 4), with Elisso Virsaladze.

Vladimir Ashkenazy/André Previn for Rachmaninov's Piano Concertos, their recordings are hauntingly beautiful.

Medtner, of course. The Hyperion Demidenko recordings are fine there.

If you really like Rachmaninov and wish he had composed more than four, then you can listen to someone trying to out-Rachmaninov Rachmaninov. I am speaking of Sergei Borkiewicz! The Hyperion recording has it paired with Arensky's early concerto (op. 2).

Thanks for the continued suggestions.

I am about to pop this one in the car stereo on the way to work.  Should be a fantastic drive in.

Yes indeed. And the quintet is one of Medtner's best compositions.

In addition to the items mentioned, some of which are fantastic (Gilels, Richter, Beroff, Prokofiev playing Prokofiev, Argerich):

I can't recommend any recording that cuts the slow movement of Concerto No. 2. The movement should last about 13 minutes, not 7. It's my favorite movement from any Tchaikovsky piano concerto, so cuts are a dealbreaker for me.

I have the Pletnev/Fedoseyev that is quite good. No cuts I think, but I don't have the disc in front of me to check.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Never knew that these were two different Rachs.  Same backing with Reiner.  They were different dates, correct?

I discovered how good Prokofiev's Second Piano Concerto is through this recording. Love the Isaac Levitan cover painting too:
