This forum is not for everyone.  First you have to be into collecting big time.  And then you have to have very specific tastes to find these threads interesting.  I have never seen such highly specialized discussions on the other classical music forums.  The focus tends to be on composers only a handful of listeners in the entire world listen to, or alternatively the most esoteric pieces famous composers ever wrote.  These are not interesting threads to most classical music listeners.

I know both girls and guys that listen to classical, I just don't know any that obsessively collect cds and lps.

Or you can just hang out in the Diner.  ;D

Ah, good old Gumpendorf. Escorted where in particular? The Theater an der Wien?

First and foremost, Haydn's House. After that, it's all just gravy!  :)

Why does gender matter on an internet forum anyway? Do men and women type differently or something?

Yes! Exactly! That's the question: apparently, women don't type... at least here. The question is why.  :)

Well, yes, but the women who are here aren't all that different from the men. They like classical music and listening to cds and so forth.

If there is a question that needs to be asked I'd think it would be why so many of the most well-liked, knowledgeable, erudite posters—the few people who could elevate most of the discussions here above the superficial—have disappeared or grown scarce over time.

No doubt, I think it's a licit question, too. Even if I haven't noticed this massive fugue of talented members.

That said, I have seen this question almost a statistic exercise because, as a matter of fact, there are very few women here, without any consideration to the quality or distinctive nature of their messages. Simply a very little number of women is posting here and some people are curious to know why.

Is that remark referring to those secretaries back in the 1950's who could not type?   ;)

Me too. We are a very collectro-centric (euphony) group here, and the only way to avoid it is to do your own thing or leave. I choose to do my own thing. Many choose to leave. :-\

I actually don't mind all of the recording talk all the time. It is nice to know when discovering new works because I'd like to base my opinions off of decent recordings. I usually use the "search" feature with the composer/performer names to see what I get.

Man, you're lucky that you know anyone who likes classical music. Some of my friends seem interested in it because I like it so much. While it is flattering to have enthusiasm spread to others, I wish I knew more people who had the vast knowledge of repertoire that I can only dream of having (like the people here). I have a friend who is an amazing pianist and he knows piano repertoire very well (and introduced me to Messiaen -- a favorite of mine two years later). Another friend of mine is very well-versed in standard classical/romantic repertoire. This is great for someone like me who started off mostly in the 20th century and wants to "expand backward". He's also trying to do the same with modern repertoire which is cool, so I burned a CD for him of music by Adams, Bartok, Ades, Messiaen, and Ligeti.

Maybe they spend more time listening to the music and going to concerts rather than writing posts on an internet forum...?  :P

Could be true for many for them.

All that snobbish male blabbering about art.

But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

Very well put.

But, at some extent, a little bit contradictory with the idea that women are more verbal creatures than we are.

I guess I'm not still doing this distinction, but just talking in general. Actually, when I read the previous post by Marc, I instantly recalled this news:

I don't know if it's scientifically well founded, but it does a lot of sense when I analyze my own (general) experience with women.

I have no doubt this is a contributing factor. Hell, we have plenty of guys who leave because they can't deal with the competitiveness of some of our more avid members. No matter the gender, it usually comes down to having an element of thick skin, because it becomes virtually impossible to say anything without pissing someone off.  :)

Okay, now you've really got me riled!

This is not really a music site primarily, it's a recordings site, for collectors. In other words Gordo is right. He,s not the only one to make this point, Moonfish did as well.

See Cato's post for evidence of this trend.

Reading, chuckling,- listening to music composed by a living composer and conducted by a living conductor rarely talked about, and never replied to, on this forum. Oh yes: I am female.

And pray tell me where they are a more popular subject? There are lots of fans of living composers (and obviously of [other] living musicians, too), and a few living composers, too, on this forum.
