As some of you may know, Karl Henning has been very generous in allowing me to use his music in a couple of YouTube videos, these done using images that had appeared on the popular Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) site. (Video 1) (Video 2)

I am a moderator on the APOD discussion board Asterisk, and will soon be asking Asterisk readers to create videos using the images that appear in each week's Astronomy Picture of the Week poll. In these requests, I clearly state that permission for copyrighted music must be secured and encourage the use of original music and performances of music out of copyright, which must also be credited.

The best of the submitted videos will be linked to from the (extremely popular) APOD page. There is the potential for any one video to be seen by twelve people, or thousands. Hard to say!

I would like to ask whether those here would be willing to have their music, either their original compositions or their performances of, say, Beethoven sonatas (and other music out of copyright/music for which one can secure permission) used as soundtracks. What I would like to do is list GMG -- perhaps one specific thread here -- as a potential source of music for people creating videos to use as soundtracks.

I have NO idea how much response such a listing would get; it could be that only those in garage bands create videos in order to promote their own band's music. Or that no one does. Or that people use recordings of the ambient sound in their houses, with dogs barking and kids bouncing balls off the living room wall, as soundtracks.

Still, I would hope that some would be looking for music, and that some of you might be looking for additional ways to get your music compositions/performances out there, and that this might be a way to match the two.

Interested? Questions? Please let me know by posting on this thread; thank you!!

No takers? Dang! Not only was I hoping to link those creating videos with the fine musicians here, but I now find I'm in need of a ~5-minute piano work for a video I've got just about ready to go except for the soundtrack! If anyone has a little Beethoven or Bach or Mendelssohn to spare, please let me know; thanks!

Luke Ottevanger has two Sonatas in Absentia which might fit: they are longer than 5 minutes, but you could listen to determine if a 5-minute block would fit.

Owlice actually PM-ed me to ask about using my music - I'm afraid I've been so busy at work that I didn't get round to replying (those of you who PM me regularly know what I am like). Take this as a public apology, Owlice! I'm more than happy for you to use my music should you wish to, only I'm very aware that most of my recordings have shortcomings in one or all of the areas recording quality/performance quality/instrument quality. So I would feel happiest if I could have some input into which of the recordings was chosen!

Cato, thanks for the heads-up about Luke's sonatas! And for getting him to post! :D

Luke, thanks for being willing! For my current project, I'm rather pressed for time so can't right now devote time to listening to a lot of unfamiliar music -- though I have heard some of yours, which is what prompted my email to you -- to find something suitable for this particular video. For this, I'm hoping for something from standard rep that doesn't need to be edited at all. However, if you can point me to a specific work of yours that you think would be fitting -- from the standpoint of time (~ 5 minutes; the video stands at 4:59 right now, and I can make a few adjustments if needed, but can't add too much), performance, and instrument -- I'd certainly give it a listen!

Whether I use something of yours for this current project or not, however, I certainly hope to use something of yours in the future if you will let me!

Karl, you surely know that I'll use more of your music! ETA: When I started this current project, I had in mind to use the Preface to the Dim Nuns, as I thought this video would not be so long, but alas, it grew longer than that work. I do plan to use that Preface, though, complete and wholly as written!

As much as I want something for my current project -- all ready to go except for the sound! -- I'm also hoping that performers and composers here will want to work with others who may make videos and that I can point those who might be looking for suitable music here.
