Sad news these last months and weeks...

British conductor Frank Shipway died in a car crash and soprano Christina Deutekom (aged 82) died after a fall in her home.

Cristina Deutekom, (28 August 1931 - 7 August 2014)[1] was a Dutch coloratura soprano opera singer.
She sang with all the leading tenors of her time, including Carlo Bergonzi, José Carreras, Franco Corelli, Plácido Domingo, Nicolai Gedda, Alfredo Kraus, Luciano Pavarotti, and Richard Tucker.

Frank Shipway, 79, was trained by the esteemed John Barbirolli and performed all over the world with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Italy's National Symphony Orchestra.

He was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital after the crash at 5pm on Tuesday, but died from his injuries on Wednesday morning.

The 20-year-old driver of the other car, a man from Devizes, was airlifted to Southmead Hospital, Bristol, and discharged later the same evening.

Mr Shipway from Conock, near Devizes, Wilts,. was a director of Devizes Junior Eisteddfod, a two-day musical festival for children.

Lisa Jacobs, general administrator said: "Frank brought a wealth of music knowledge and brought in a number of musicians who were friends of his to adjudicate the children's classes.

"He was a renowned conductor and he bought with him that incredible experience and was very passionate about it.

"He was such an enigmatic man and we liked him enormously."

Mr Shipway was trained by British conductor and cellist John Barbirolli and aided by Herbert von Karajan and Lorin Maazel, before he started his career with the Berlin Opera.
