Lately, I've been thinking of taking out an insurance policy on my CD collection. What would be the easiest and most efficient way to go about organizing and assimilating my current collection for such purposes? Thanks to anyone who could point me in the right direction.

Gaaa. I can't figure out how to keep it straight, especially with big boxes. You need a database program. My experience with the phone bar code scanners is that they are slow and flaky, and cannot detect duplications well, or help with box bloat. but for insurance a bar code scan might be perfect.

Cool, thanks, Ken. I'll look into this.

Hmm, would taking pictures of larger sets be a valid way of recording your collection? Besides, what about all those receipts from the vendors?

I once had my collection insured. The insurance compmany considered it a "valuable collection" posing an added risk for theft and TRIPLED my insurance premium.... ???

When I considered that my main concerns - the effort that went into assembling the collection and the fact that many items are irreplaceable - I realised that those aspects cannot be insured and that the financial aspect came only secondary.

So, it is not insured. If I ever have the time I will ripp it and hope for the best otherwise. And the risk of theft has gone down considerably, I think. What burglar wants to be bothered carrying hundreds of CDs aroundg that have no value whatsoever on the streets? :D No, he will take my computer, tablet, phone and camera and will only look at my bookcases filled with CDs in bewilderment. .. And if the the whole place ever burns down, I will start all over again - hopefully with a digital backup.

I am with Que here, although I never even bothered to ask for insurance (but I though about it and checked some options). I do not think burglars will carry away 1000s of CDs and if the whole place burns down, getting the CDs back will probably not be the main concern...

I live in a (hippy) co-op so I carry renter's insurance. I just count it as part of the contents.

This.

But you should check your homeowner's insurance if you have that to see what is covered (or the homeowner can do that). You may be generally covered. But each is different, so start there. If you don't have this, maybe look into that first. Some policies will generally cover the contents of your house up to a certain amount.
