L'Oiseau Lyre has probably been waiting in the wings for this! That's OK, they needed to be re-released anyway. :)

Still left out his 76 & 77 though, for some reason.

I've been pondering that. 76 & 77 are on BBC, I think they must have sold the rights rather than merely licensing them. It doesn't make sense any other way, because they would surely want them all if they could do it. Decca were such fools about it anyway; they had got through the process on all the older, lesser known stuff. If, as they said at the time, they hadn't made a good return on them, then what sort of business decision is it to stop just when you are getting to the ones you would have really made money on, like the 'Paris' et al!?!  ::)

I would suggest to anyone to get that BBC disk while you can, it won't be around forever, and it's a peach! :)

They're probably Haydn in a closet somewhere. ;D (I really do apologize, but I simply could NOT resist...)

He died 24th of September in Cambridge, age 73.

He devoted his musical career to introducing, playing and conducting the authentic sound of older instruments. In 1973 he founded the Academy of Ancient Music, where only the historical instruments counted. Admirers of his kind of music will mourn the loss.

Just arrived - a used item from the Amazon MP for $6 - disc surface is pristine & plays fine - now waiting for the BIG BOX to be released at the end of the month; anxious to see what the MP offerings will be?  Dave :)

Yes, that's about what I paid for it too (although mine was new). Prices have been rising steadily since I first got it, last time I checked the AMP it had gotten up there comparatively.

I'm curious too what the MP will hold for this box. I would guess importCD will be pretty fair. :-\

I think you will be pleased. This would have been the first disk of Volume 11. That was the box I was waiting for! 1/3 is better than nothing though, by a long shot!  :)

Not sure ... Hogwood's Haydn box - it was released (reissued?) 2012 by Universal Italy. Just got that one. Alas it has a small little booklet with only a few pages of notes in several languages - quite unlike the mighty fine Mozart box which has a rather thick booklet with extensive comments on the various periods of Mozart's symphonic oeuvre, which I found highly enlightening.

So ... was there ever a Haydn box with an extensive booklet as well? And then, after all, this listing on Presto to me suggests a re-print of the 2012 edition rather than a proper rerelease/reissue/remaster/rewhatever?

Each of the individual (3 disk) boxes had an excellent booklet by James Webster. As I understand it, the 2012 collection only has essentially a track listing. The entire collected 10 volumes booklet is on the Internet as a pdf. I found it with a google search, although I can't remember the terms I used. If no reports back here that they found it, I will find it again and post a link. Even having the 10 individual analog booklets, it is nice to have the large digital version on my computer.

No luck here ... but thanks, so there was indeed only one box compiling it all - and that one has the usual booklet indeed: many pages of tracklisting, a short text in several languages (EMI-like), and the usual (Decca/Universal-like) silly bulk listing of recording places and dates. I'd assume the new one will be identical, otherwise, having just bought the 2012 one, I'd be a bit disappointed.

Yes, I was disappointed to hear the booklet situation. I like to be able to wholeheartedly recommend things, and this is a drawback. Not insurmountable though. :)

Has this at all dented the prices on the original releases?

In Germany it depends on the Volume. Some are still expensive, even used copies. Some, though, are as low as 9 Euro. The price for the box set at Amazon has doubled recently. €175  ???  The last time I checked it was €85.

I was not aware of the 76/77 disc and it seems to be unavailable now. Was this recorded later than the L'oiseau lyre series or only published much later?
I have three vols of the series and unfortunately the two I'd probably like to have in addition are expensive (9 and 10).

IIRC Goodman (and also Fischer) are quite good in 76 and 77. Two rather underrated pieces, if I am not mistaken they were already composed together with 78 for a planned trip to London that never came to pass

Got mine from JPC for 50€ a couple of weeks ago, but they don't seem to list it any longer.

It seems a bit of a shame that there is only one tribute to a musician whose works must/ought to be on many GMG forumites shelves, so I'm going to double the number of responses in the following rather unusual way:

It is 40 years since the BBC recorded "The Tempest" supposedly in quadrophonic sound although I don't think it was ever released as such. I have been meaning to upload my tape of the recording and was prompted to do so by the fact that Christopher Hogwood, playing electronic harpsichord, was among the distinguished (with one exception) musicians on the recording and was actually sitting to my left . The musicians don't feature a great deal in the final mix and as David Cain was one of the Radiophonic Workshop luminaries you wonder why he didn't just get synthing and looping etc. but we wouldn't then have gathered in the Kingsway studio assembled in a large circle and waited as you do for the tech staff to get it sorted.
