Hi,
Would really appreciate some help!
My dad is older and lives in a rural area where they do not get internet. He loves opera so I try and buy him CD's when I can.
He served in the military in Stuttgart in the 1950's, I recently bought him Debussy: Pelleas et Melisande, in German , he loves Lore Wissman and Wolfgang Windgassen.
I would love to get him some other recordings that would've featured singers he would've seen perform in Stuttgart at that time.
Any suggestions of CD's I could purchase from that Stuttgart era?
Additionally, he seems to really enjoy compilations, so if there are any good ones you'd recommend, would love those as well.
Appreciate any help!
Dave

I´m afraid I can´t say much about opera recordings, but the first name that comes to mind as regards conductors would be Carl Schuricht of course, who recorded a lot

From the 50s in Stuttgart, there´s a Schumann´s "Manfred", a Mahler "Symphony 2", a Brahms "Deutsches Requiem", a lot of ouvertures etc.

Not sure about the availability, though.

If you check several Haenssler historical (or whatever they are called) series they seem to have quite a bit from the southwestern region (including Stuttgart), mostly from radio archives, I guess.
Not sure about opera but labels like "Walhall" and "Cantus" abound in 1950s opera recordings, again often from German radio archives and there might artists involved your father remembers from that time.

No singers here, but--Some of my favorite Bach LPs are of Karl Münchinger conducting the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra in outstanding performances of the Brandenburg Concerti and the Musical Offering. He recorded them in the early 50s on Decca (mono), then in the late 50s (early 60s?) Decca in stereo. I have both LP sets. I believe he likely recorded them later as well.

Try Amazon and poke around a bit. I highly recommend these!

Thanks so much to those who have responded.  I will look into the recommendations.  As a U.S. student of policy and political science his whole life, my dad is so concerned and ashamed of what the political process has become.  I am hoping some CD's from his youth will help cheer him up a bit.

for a general search try http://www.hbdirect.com/
putting Stuttgart in the search engine    It pulled up some 594 results, probably a lot outside the years you want and some rock but easy enough to wade through and then search around best prices.  A Callas recital recorded there in 1959 was an early find

Definitely check out the labels that carry those mid century opera broadcasts, like: Myto, Opera d'Oro, Archipel, Walhall, and especially Cantus or Cantus-Line or Line Music or whatever they're actually called (don't mistake them for another Cantus label that deals in baroque and early music).
