Karl Henning

I want to bring home 6 CDs from the Symphony box for listening over this evening and tomorrow.

Which should I select?

TIA

Random selection will probably yield excellent results, given this box.

Brian

I had good luck driving home for Christmas with Sibelius 2 & 7! I also love the Dvorak/Franck coupling and whichever disc has David Diamond and Carlos Chavez on it. Rather enjoyed Bernstein's own first symphony on a recent first listen. And I'm going to play the Prokofiev later today. :)

Harris 3
Dvorak -- eccentric but that'sa plus
One Haydn disc

Thanks!  I did already have (and already know) the Sibelius . . .

Oh, and when you get to the Age of Anxiety, I think your table will be at risk.

Mookalafalas

I agree with Brian, but to add a couple of others, the Brahms is awesome, IMO.  If you would rather leave the warhorses behind, his American stuff (schuman and Ives) are really good, and his Haydn is a delight.

{WOW, once again, two responses while I'm typing}
It's all good...

I can add the Brahms.  I do already know (and of course concur in praise of) his Schuman and Haydn!

Roussell 3rd
Hindemith E-flat

Roussel now added. Aye, that Hindemith is hot!

I would think Karl too well-mannered to inflict Ives on his family
. Lots of good choices.

Yes and yes!
And his Hindemith in the concerto box is sensational too. The Weber Metamorphoses is beyond praise. (Hint: you need that box too Karl.)

I'm sure I do; the Op.50 Konzertmusik must be in there . . .

What excellent choices we all made! (And you, too, I assume, with Disc 60.) I think Bernstein's Brahms 2 was still alive and competing when madaboutmahler's Brahms game abruptly got canceled.

Cosi bel do

Good choices but there's also a lovely Goldmark CD, the Sibelius (no. 2 is superb) and the Haydn symphonies, for instance #86 is excellent.

Karl Henning

Too late to add the Goldmark (there will be 2015!) . . . and encore une fois, I already know about the excellent Sibelius and Haydn, as I had bought earlier reissues of those prior to this Big Box o' Symphonies  :)

Mookalafalas

Better just take the whole set and leave some clothes behind to make room...I suggest leaving socks and underwear.  You're traveling.  Go wild!
It's all good...
