I have many versions of schubert's Winterreise cycle and am keen to find new interpretations.

I assumed that there might be English language recordings and began to look for one to purchase.

Although I wasn't expecting there to be a glut of recordings, I was at least expecting to find several.

My searches have, alas, not yet been successful. I have found complete cycles in both Dutch and French - although I haven't yet heard them - but nothing in English, other than a few individual items, which, whilst interesting, are not what I'm looking for.

So - a fairly straightforward request for some help/advice/guidance please. Does anyone know of - or better still - possess an English language version of this cycle to point me in the right direction.

Thanks for reading.

Best Wishes,
David

Shura Gehrman and Nina Walker recorded an English language version for Nimbus.  I've not heard it, so I don't know if it is any good.  The work is also available in Swedish and Japanese, and probably a few other languages, but I've only ever listened to it sung in German.

Todd - many many thanks. I've just managed to order a used copy from an Amazon UK marketplace seller. I'm intrigued now as fo the quality of the interpretation and which translation they will have used.

Just as a matter of interest, what is your favourite interpretation?

Gotta go the safe route and say one of the DFD and Gerald Moore recordings.  Probably the EMI one below.  (I have four or five other DFD recordings of the work, too; it's hard to miss him in this work.)    The Schreier/Schiff also has some nice things to offer.

It's my favorite, and it comes with "Die Schone Mullerin" and "Schwanengesang" on this Decca Trio set.

One of the most haunting versions I've heard is by soprano Natasha Mirkovich and hurdy-gurdy player Matthias Loibner. It's OOP in the US, but Amazon UK has a couple of copies. Here's the Classics Today review: http://www.classicstoday.com/review/review-15863/

NEITHER IS IN ENGLISH
, BTW. I don't think I've ever heard it in English.
