"A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people ... then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbour — such is my idea of happiness"

Tolstoy

I think "Nightmare" may be one of my Top Five Outer Limits episodes. Top Ten, for sure.

[Matisse] was interested neither in fending off opposition,
nor in competing for the favor of wayward friends.
His only competition was with himself. — Françoise Gilot

Irons

In four parts on Netflix Adolescence reaches beyond excellence of script, acting and production. Truly a tale of our times and boy is that harrowing!

A tour de force that fully deserves every plaudit the series is currently receiving. Watch it!
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Echo (2024)
Alaqua Fox, Vincent D'Onofrio, Graham Greene

Echo is a deaf, motorcycle-riding, female Native-American superhero, whose superpowers conjure previous generations of her matriarchal ancestors.

This is darker, with much less humor than most of these Marvel shows. Echo is a spin-off of Hawkeye (2021), where the opening episode shares many of the same scenes from Hawkeye to get the viewer caught up on how Echo was involved in the Marvel world previously.

Vincent D'Onofrio seems a perfect fit as Kingpin, plus it is always great to see Graham Greene.

I've got that ordered on blu-ray. I was immediately sold after reading this review in the Guardian:

Adolescence review – the closest thing to TV perfection in decades

Its a pity that the other series she mentions at the start doesn't seem to be available anywhere.

Karl Henning

I'd forgotten that Ed Asner is in an Outer Limits episode.

See a side of the United Kingdom you probably couldn't have imagined: Benefits Britain: Life on the Dole

I never thought I could imagine an argument in favor of forced sterilization, and then I saw this show.

Fëanor

I'm rewatching 3 Body Problem on Netflix in preparation for the promised new season.  It's a fascinating and original twist on the old sci-fi alien invasion theme.

There are a few of the usual science implausibilities but the production, direction, and acting are all very slick.

Der lächelnde Schatten

I've been watching reruns of these guys:

Between The Three Stooges and the Marx Brothers, I haven't laughed so hard in years. They just don't make them like these comedy troupes any more.

I am thoroughly impressed. The sheer force of this series is astonishing. So powerful, in fact, that drawing a parallel to any other series feels nigh impossible.

The cinematography and performances are of the highest calibre: the series unfolds in a continuous, unbroken take, devoid of editing, which lends it an almost surreal yet unsettlingly authentic quality. This approach imbues the scenes with the immediacy of a documentary, placing the viewer in the position of an eyewitness to unfolding events. The level of immersion teeters on the brink of what one can endure, compelling reflection on just how closely art can mirror reality.

Most worthy of recommendation!

Just wrapped up Season 6 of Mission:Impossible. Sorry to see Leonard Nimoy go.

Number Six

Barney Miller

I am reading a book called HONEY, I'M HOMO! about the presentation of LGBTQ folks on television. So far, there have been excellent chapters on Bewitched and All in the Family.

Now I am reading about Barney Miller, a show I never watched much as a kid. (I think I am about 5 years too young for it.) So I watched the first few episodes last night, and I have to say that it's pretty great so far. A bit gritty and raw, dealing with some serious issues. But always witty and a little corny at times in the best sit-com way.

All in the Family was very pioneering. A great episode in which Archie can't believe that a football player is gay.

What If...: Season 2 (2023)
Jeffrey Wright, Hayley Atwell

A speculative Marvel anthology animated series, which seems to retain many of the actors from the movies to do the voiceovers.

I'm taking a Tatort break to watch The Last Detective starring Peter Davison. Davison played an important role in one of my all time favorite series Love For Lydia.
