Quote from: DavidW on May 12, 2025, 06:17:01 AMFunny enough, those novels sold very poorly at first, even indies books did better. But then, when everyone discovered that Galbraith was really Rowling, those novels became instant bestsellers. I've read the first one, and I've also read The Casual Vacancy, and I'm convinced that she definitely has range and is not relegated to only children's stories.

I started reading Casual Vacancy, and couldn't finish even the opening chapter. The needlessly detailed description of a fatal heart attack seemed outright sadistic to me, and put me off from any interest in the rest of the book.

(It certainly wasn't something to be found in children's story.)

Homicide: Life on the Streets.

Isn't bad! Shades of Hill Street Blues...

That's unfortunate. I hope some other network (a prime opportunity for Apple TV+?) will pick it up and continue the series.

If that first chapter put you off, it is very lucky you didn't continue. I actually considered the first chapter somewhat comedic, but the novel became so dark after that that I couldn't continue.  I think her detective/mystery series is brilliant, but it's often exceedingly violent and disturbing as well.
It's all good...

Der lächelnde Schatten

I've been rewatching some Seinfeld via Netflix (I own all nine seasons on DVD but it's easier to just stream it sometimes). Anyway, one of my 'Top 3' sitcoms without question (my other two are Frasier and Wings).

I'm on the 2nd season of The Expanse. It certainly deserve its accolades but is fraught with inconsistencies concerning its attempt at techno-realism. Overall I give it a B+ for effort on that score. I think fans of classical pre Wars-Trek scifi will appreciate the series.

The Wheel of Time, Season 3 (2025)
Rosamund Pike

I agree with @DavidW  that this is the best season of the show. Since I haven't read the books, it had been tough remembering the characters and plot threads in previous seasons, but this viewing was the easiest for me thus far.

Too bad the series was cancelled. They obviously poured a lot of cash into this season and it looked great.

In British TV, everyone eventually becomes a detective!

I'm telling you, even these people will eventually start solving murder mysteries:

The "squeaky wheel got the grease".  Called my cable provider after frustrations regarding watching tennis; I was transferred (finally) to the "retention department"...had a lovely and helpful experience there talking to a gentleman.  I was given extra channels and also a price reduction and am back to watching more of my beloved tennis.  :)

Trying hard now to get a hold of my friend who I think would like to watch the upcoming match.
