I second the Raekallio recommendation. There's also this marvelous recording of the arrangement of the Cinderella suite for two pianos by Pletnev.

I have that CD and it is wonderful. I love the Ravel 'Mother Goose' too which was the reason I bought the disc originally.

Noseda, Jurowski, or Rozhdestvensky?

Noseda (delicious, through and through), though I do also have the Jurowski.

I have Jurowski. I feel he does the work proud. Haven't heard the others.

It is a while since I have heard the Jurowski, and my praise of the Noseda above is no comment on J.   0:)

Thread Duty:

This thread is impossible for me.  Each time I visit it, I should have a different set of five.

That said, I don't mind playing.  Today's list:

  • The Ugly Duckling, Op.18
  • Visions fugitives, Op.22
  • Symphony № 2 in d, Op.41
  • Romeo & Juliet, Op.64
  • Violin Sonata № 1 in f, Op.80

Five is the wrong number, anyway.

I have this disc in another form, but agree - it is phenomenal. Really well done - so much shade and nuance.

Yes, the shade and nuance are exactly why I like Chiu.

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

Thanks, I was happy some other people voted for it too - one of Prokofiev's best works in my view.
