I thought I was the only person to like Zdravitsa. I really love it, obviously without bearing in mind its lyrics and whom was dedicated.
I don't know better cantata in this genre. It a pity fact as you know.
G.Rozhdestvensky choose Zdravitsa for the concert devoted to his own birthday (conductor was Polyansky).
And here is the recording of Zdravitsa with Rozhdestvensky himself (this recording is from repetition, but then it was on concert):

Thanks Dima, for showing us that performance with the great Rozhdestvensky!

+1

I'll watch it later!

Five treasures not yet mentioned:

Semyon Kotko (mentioned once but crossed out)
Piano sonata #9 (the only piece I know that predicts the future)
The Year 1941 (slight, but really delightful)
Eugene Onegin (though anyone who has listened to Prokofiev has heard many little bits of this, his most self-raided piece)
Pique Dame (very fun)

I don't recall seeing Ode to the End of War or either of the two overtures, American and Russian. And the wildly gorgeous quintet only got one mention that I saw. Same for the extravagantly luscious Betrothal in a Monastery. (Gerhard did an opera, his only one, to the same Sheridan play as Prokofiev set for Betrothal.)

Damn, really?!  I adore No. 8 because it is so symphonic but 9 predicts the future!?!?!

André

Romeo and Juliet
Violin concerto no 1
Alexander Nevsky
Ala and Lolli (Scythian Suite)
Piano concerto no 3

An update is necessary now:

Symphony No. 5
String quartet No. 2
Cantata for the 20th anniversary of the October Revolution
Romeo and Juliet
Zdravitsa!

It's a joke. It is also true. But I don't want to explain. Just listen to it. You'll hear.

If you like Zdravitsa, you must listen to Prokofiev's "Songs of our days" op.76 for chorus and orchestra. It is cantata like
music - it begins with marсh and then 8 song for chorus. In my view it is next after Zdravitsa his masterpiece in this
genre. You can see it here from 43 minute till 1h 18 minutes (it is one of the last concerts of Rozhdestvensky):

The song "Lullaby" from "Songs of our days" is one of the most beautiful songs of Prokofiev (here it is separately
from this concert): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s85M6rUt-ac

As far as I remember, I did listen to Songs of our Days in some occasion, but I don't have strong memories of it.

Only one symphony and one concerto allowed.  >:D

Symphony 6
Ivan the Terrible Film Score
Piano Concerto No.2
Scythian Suite
War and Peace Orchestral Suite.

I'm aware that the Ivan music and War and Peace suite were compiled and arranged by others but these are still my favourites.
Totally forgotten I'd started this thread  ::). I think that my choices are pretty much the same now although yesterday I was really enjoying the Overture on Hebrew Themes (chamber version) and I also like the Russian Overture.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

I'm not satisfied with this old list, time for an update (in no particular order):

Symphony No. 6
On the Dnieper
Le pas d'acier
Sinfonia Concertante
Violin Sonata in F minor

Time to update my list I suppose:

Violin Sonata in F minor, Op. 80
String Quartet No. 1 in B minor, Op. 50
Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 16
Visions fugitives, Op. 20
Le pas d'acier (The Steel Step), Op. 41

I'm afraid I don't know his operas well at all and I'm just now becoming more and more familiar with his solo piano music thanks to Frederic Chiu's traversal of these works on Harmonia Mundi.

This performance may change this point of view, that is why I recommended it.

Still my favourites I think. Hon. mention for the underrated  Symphony 3.

G'day, Karl!

Are we counting Romeo and Juliet separately? ;)

I suppose I'll add the Symphony-Concerto, since I did have that in mind at about the same time
