Hi all, my name's sean, and I like (whispers) *vinyl*.

I'm almost completely ignorant about classical music, but not for want of being exposed many times; I'm an ex-sound technician, and worked for some time at a conservatoire, where I heard, but did not listen to, lots of music, classical and otherwise, but generally played on 'classical' instrumentation. Now I'm 45, my top end rolls off a bit due to too many late-night high volume sessions, and I'm frustrated with what 'mainstream' music has to offer. I'll be consulting the Beginners section shortly.

Why vinyl? I like big sleeves, lots of sleeve notes, the ritual, analogue warmth & cheap records. I also acknowledge that my listening conditions are far from perfect, so perfect source material is the last of my audio worries.

I look forward to reading a ton of useful stuff here, although I guess it'll be quite a while before I can be useful myself - much learning to do, to do...

Thanks,

Sean

Thanks for the welcome!

North Star, no preferences at all, I'm trying to come with a (almost) completely open mind - although I did enjoy putting the sound design together for a stage production of Amadeus many years ago - trawling though many cd's to find the sections referred to in the text meant listening to large chunks of Mozart. I guess that's where I'll probably start - although with anything not opera, as I still can't find beauty in operatic singing. Seems to me, it just sets my teeth on edge. Ho hum.

Part I of the answer is: Bruckner, Mahler, Schoenberg.

But the rest of the answer has many parts!   8)
