Oh, that is a good 'un. This particular album introduced me to the still quite underrated trumpet playing of Woody Shaw.

Not underrated in my house! A large chunk of his work as a leader is still available in two boxes:

That's the Columbia albums, the studio part of which were previously released on Mosaic as well ... and Mosaic still has the Muse albums in print:
http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=255-MD-CD

There's quite a bit more of course, such as two Elektra albums (reissued by Wounded Bird), one on Enja, a Blue Note double disc of a live recording with Geri Allen at the piano, the two co-led Blue Note albums with Freddie Hubbard, two albums on Contemporary, a disc on Red, the live material on Highnote (four volumes of Woody Shaw Live and one first one so far of the group with Louis Hayes ... there's one one of the Shaw/Hayes band on TCB in their great Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series) ... and there must be more that I forget right now. And of course there's some more sideman stuff, too (Tyrone Washington!).

I think it's gorgeous - but no matter how much I admire Wadada Leo Smith, it usually takes a couple of stabs at his albums before they start unfolding. Caught him live in two different settings last November, and it was amazing!

My dad being a jazz nut I had my share of Miles Davis when I was young, 50's Miles Davis that is, 'Round About Midnight especially. My dad teached me that after 60's or so Miles Davis sucks. He hates electronics, fusion, funk and all that. A few years ago I heard Bitches Brew and found it very interesting. I borrowed In A Silent Way from my dad's friend and liked it a lot. So, I found this twofer of In A Silent Way and On the Corner. Just listened to the latter on Spotify and it blew me away! So, this twofer I ordered just 5 minutes ago. Five pounds delivered!  :)

The track Black Satin sounds like drum 'n' bass, 25 years ahead of it's time. Amazing!

There are plenty of stories about "On the Corner", which is indeed pretty much unique, and an amazing album!

Miles was absorbing Bach, James Brown (whose "Cold Sweat" btw. is Pee Wee Ellis' take on "So What"), Stockhausen at that time ... I think Buckmaster stayed with Miles for a while (and practices the Cello suites), he is heard on the album as well, and he brought Stockhausen into the game, I guess. However, speaking of the beats I read somewhere (in Tingen's "Miles Electric" book I think) that what ended up on the record was more or less the fills - it was planned to add the actual beats later on, too, but then it sounded so good, they skipped that ... si non è vero ...

Not that I had known I did - but all the nicer to read then!  ;D

This box by Howard Riley is one of my most recent jazz acquisitions ... prob. right down your alley:

Don't I know it! My wishlist has already grown exponentially - the library eventually to follow, of course. ;)

I have listened to this once. This is a nice and cheap set, but it's not 9 albums + bonus cut. It's only 8 albums + bonus cuts (3 tracks from Rich vs Roach).
