I love how that disk starts, bristling with energy and excitement of music. Dolphy's tone is hot fire.

Evolution is a recent reissue of a 1980s recording by a mostly Japanese group done in the US. The recording was brought to Japan and released there. The compositions are very much in the modal/post bop tradition of the early 1960s Blue Note and Impulse records, which is acknowledged in the liner notes. The music is performed with confidence. Some of the originals are also very nice, but overall it lacks energy and feels somewhat reserved.

Blind Willie Johnson: blues, gospel, etc.

^There was a stretch some years back where that 2cd set was all I wanted to listen to.

Desert island discs for sure.

No kidding: "the truth" was how I was going to describe it if pressed.

This is a real mismatch of a cd. Some beautiful compositions and some pieces that feel out of place. The playing is not as inspired as on live version of these compositions. The disk's cover suggests that there'd be some intense free jazz blowing, but it is not so.

I haven't played it in quite a while, but I remember being quite fond of that one. Will try again tomorrow.

There's a spectacular live version of Lonnie's Lament on a 2xCD called Afro Blue Impressions. I wish Crescent had that kind of playing.

Nice disc. When I was a teen, I was crazy about Tin Tin Deo in the album.

Thanks. I'm crazy for Philly Joe Jones. I'd listen to anything that he played on.

Personally I've never understood the fuss about that one.
