Absolutely. Along with The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, Mingus' two greatest (IMO, needless to say - well, maybe I do need to say it ;)).

Louis Smith - Here Comes Louis Smith (1958)
Really curious about this one - it's been on my wishlist for a long time because I'm a big fan of Buckshot La Funke. How do you like it?

Heh. Buckshot Le Funke is Cannonball Adderley, right? It's a fun album and he's showcased well. Hard to believe he was recording it around the same time as Milestones as this in contrast is pure bebop of the Diz-Bird type.

Here Comes Louis Smith is a fun album indeed and with that lineup of musicians, how could it not be?

Thread duty:

One of my all-time favorites. Everything is just right here.

Now:

Petrucciani made this album when he was 18 yrs. old. The music on this album doesn't sound like it came from a teenager. It sounds like he's been playing for 30 years. Quite an accomplishment indeed.

What did Cecil Taylor say in 1955?

I meant "was he right?" in the sense of "was he going in the right direction?" His earlier recordings were done as early as 1955, and even back then he was departing from the norm. His music was more approachable back then. Some of the tunes are based on standards, and some are blues forms. With a blues form, we know the basic underlying form, so it's easier to interpret 'the stuff on top of it.' For instance, Steve Lacy solos in a more traditional way, and when Cecil Taylor solos, it's easier to hear the implications of what he's doing. It has more to do with rhythmic gesture, and less with melody or harmony.

Now listening to Chick Corea-related groups.
