I'ts beautiful!

I have to confess however that I'm not that familiar with his output ... heard Leimgruber-Demierre-Phillips live a few years ago, know that trio's albums and have some sideman stuff (from Jimmy Giuffre to Chris McGregor), and of course plenty of John Surman from around 1970 ... but somehow I never came around checking out his own output (or rather: I wanted to, but never found any of his albums).

Currently playing more from the recent Zorn box and enjoying it a lot - right now the last disc, starting off with five piano solos by Craig Taborn, who then is joined by Vadim Neselovksyi for two piano duos. Neselovskyi then has the rest of the disc for himself, after two solos he is joined by Dan Loomis (b) and Ronen Itzik (d) for three trio tracks. Never heard of Neselvskyi so far.

The only disc from the box that may really not be for me, and having heard that band in concert I dind't expect it to be otherwise, is the second, which features Cleric.

Martial Solal drew keywords out of a hat in summer ... he says a few words and then starts to improvise, on subjects such as "Count Basie", "Ellington", "Kenny [Clarke]", "Léon Morin [, Prêtre]", "A bout de souffle", "Alger" etc. Delightful!

Ron Carter - Where? (1961)
Eddie Harris - The In Sound (1965)

That Eddie Harris is a strong album but opens with the weakest track, which could easily put one off.

Bobby Hutcherson - Acoustic Masters II (1994)
Herbie Mann - Concerto Grosso in D Blues (1969)

Art Pepper - So In Love (1980)

First spin. Lovely music!

Great record.  Sonny Rollins is my favorite tenor player.  Yep, I like him better than Coltrane.

the great Paul Bley recorded two albums on March 1, 1993 in a NY studio ... the solo album is wonderful, restrained, limited to the essence, the trio seems to be a rather groovy affair, at least that's what the first track suggests, let's see how it goes on ... these were just reissued in Japan, in case anyone wonders

Just out on Uptown. Mostly radio and transcription, and some commercially released studio material from 1946/47 (one Barney Kessel date from 1945, two long jams from the Lighthouse from 1952), plenty of fine Lucky Thompson as a bonus to the great Dodo Marmarosa.

Forgot to post this one, yesterday:

The latest instalment of the fine releases by the Dutch Jazz Archives, dedicated to a JATP concert from 1960 (the Cannonball Adderley part was already released on their Cannonball disc, paired with a late 60s set). The all stars set - Roy Eldridge, Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Don Byas, Jo Jones and from Dizzy Gillespie's band Lalo Schifrin and Art Davis - is rather run-of-the-mill (Take the A-Train, the Ballad-Medley and a blues), the second half by Dizzy's quintet (Leo Wright, Schifrin, Davis, Chuck Lampkin) and guests J.J. Johnson and Stan Getz is very nice though, it starts with Ellington's "The Mooche", goes on with Getz blowing two mean solos on the 17-minute take on "Kush", and then ends with Candido guesting on the final piece.

Gave this a first spin a couple of days ago:

.. and I'm afraid I'm not sold on it. It sounds disjointed, fragmentary. There's a groove impro on each disc, the audience goes wild over it, but it sounds a bit like same-old same-old, then there's some gorgeous melodies on the second part (traditionals and standards), a very good take on "Stella By Starlight" towards the end, and possibly at the very beginning the best lengthy improvised segment (if the sequence really follows the concert sequence, that was a weird one, though the tunes towards the end make sense - but the way the improvisation evolves is really strange).

Just complete two more first spins from the 2018 pile (almost done with the jazz/improv, at least giving everything a first spin):

The Niggli is quite beautiful and surprisingly colourful indeed, and it shows plenty of "ethnical" influences ... the Parker/Guy/Lytton is intense and pretty darn good!

I just realised thats got a version of "Ida Lupino" I haven't heard.

And I'm determined to hear every commercial recording of that standard.
