Billie Holiday: Songs for Distingué Lovers

She was so great! I especially love the late recordings. I have them in this set, which includes the performances in your album:

Cannonball Adderley: Somethin' Else

Very smooth music and playing. I particularly liked the opening track Autumn Leaves.

Giving this a spin, as I'll soon have to decide on the upcoming Tristano Mosaic...
The (seemingly improbable) live session from the Sing Song Room at the Confucius Restaurant in Manhattan is awesome.

Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn
Nutcracker Suite
Peer Gynt Suite
Suite Thursday

Duke Ellington Orchestra

VonStupp's 25 Days of Christmas
I couldn't rightfully put this in the classical music Christmas thread, even though this is Grieg and Tchaikovsky.

I am a jazz appreciator, but would be remiss to think I knew much about the genre. Still I like that Ellington and Strayhorn make this music their own, almost experimentally so.

RIP Barry Harris, the great bebop pianist (and one of my favorites)

For anyone interested, a Barry Harris playlist and (link to) obituary, both by excellent jazz writer Mark Stryker, have been posted on Ethan Iverson's site:

Great set, with remarkably vivid vocals. I know that her late stuff has its detractors, but I love it.

Dave Brubeck Christmas

VonStupp's 25 Days of Christmas
At 75 years old, Brubeck's solo piano outing is a wistful one, similar to his Indian Summer a decade later, also on Telarc.

There is a wonderful article with Brubeck's longtime producer Russell Gloyd about the creation of this album, including Brubeck's reticence of both a studio recording and a Christmas album:

Recent acquisition, shot in the dark. I've gotten into British jazz of late, and saw the set on Ebay at a price in the "why not" zone.
Was uncertain about 5 CDs of solo improv. from a pianist I'd heard little by, but this is outstanding!

Vibes!

Underrated jazzman. I have his A Sense of Direction and I like it a lot.

Indeed. His playing is really good. I enjoy his older disk To My Queen, but I'm also curious to investigate his output from the 1970s onward.

I don't have a lot of vibes recordings: apart from MJQ/Jackson quite a few Bobby Hutchersons, several by Khan Jamal, only one by Dickerson (which is good).
I really want to hear Dickerson's Visions on Steeplechase (Sun Ra making a sideman appearance! :P ), but that's not easy to find.
