Hmmmm. Eb, Psalms, C, 3 Mvts.

This sucks for me as I'll have to either bump Beethoven, so I really want to count C as a Symphony 2.

So Karl, how do justify this counting???

I guess that in spite of its name, I unthinkingly consider the Symphony of Psalms a choral work;  might even argue (in spite of Igor Fyodorovich's near-sophistry of saying it is the Psalms which are being symphonized) that the title was a matter of Serge Koussevitsky commissioning a new symphony.

"Not fully satisfied" with the list? You mean, you included symphonies which you don't like all that much?  8)  0:)

And thanks, too, for reminding me that I omitted Sibelius (see exercise in the impossible, above)

;) I love these symphonies, but I'm not happy that I'm limited to these choices.

Cheers, gents. Too bad Rakhmaninov, Stravinsky, Lutoslawski, Beethoven, Schumann, Schuman, Ives, Dutilleux and Prokofiev didn't make it.  :-\

Hah, I fell into the trap of seriously thinking this through, it's indeed impossible. FWIW, this is what popped out now, more reflective of current listening habits than anything else I guess:

1. Prokofiev
2. Vermeulen 'Prelude a la nouvelle journee'
3. Nielsen
4. Martinu
5. Bruckner
6. Mahler
7. Beethoven
8. Vaughan Williams
9. Shostakovich
10. Martin - Petite symphonie concertante
