I've heard of this but never seen it.  Didn't realize it was now so rare!

Yes, that's really a little overpriced. If I were you, I would order this edition instead or order from amazon.de or .co.uk, although I guess ordering from the US will be cheaper for you.

The DVD is in the process of being re-released; it's already available in the UK here and will be available in the USA next week here.

It's probably also available in your part of the world, or should be very soon - and at a reasonable price.

Thanks for the links guys :)

I'm glad its been re-released so I'll buy a new copy at a fair price.

Now, this is a story. My freshman year of college, 2004-5, a friend of mine started to get seriously into Wagner at about the same time I did. He wanted to see this, but he didn't want to pay for it. Starving college students and whatnot. He convinced a professor, I want to say that it was the resident faculty Wagnerian - but it might not have been, to declare that it was necessary for a class. That way, the college library would buy it. So, then, did the library. It's a great look at how the greatest Wagner record of all time was made. Very interesting.

And then, of course, Culshaw's book "Ring Resounding" is required reading, too, and it should be fairly easily available as paperback or in well stocked local libraries.

I've ordered my copy from AmazonUK.

Looking forward to seeing this :)

Certainly. John Culshaw deserves as much credit as Solti for that set. I'm not sure that it would have gotten off the ground, especially since recording live at Bayreuth seemed to be a pretty popular option in the 1950s and 1960s, without Culshaw behind it.

Oh yes, it is quite, quite hilarious.  Since you should find out for yourself, I won't say another word!  :D  We can compare notes after you've seen it.

From Youtube...

The immolation scene at the recording session of Götterdämmerung in 1964. Solti conducts Nilsson and the Wiener Philharmoniker.

Thanks for the link Manuel.  :)

That was a wonderful thing to see. Birgit Nillsen was an amazing singer.

Watched this last night. Very interesting and amusing. The teamwork of the stagehands was truely impressive; what a massive operation! The film was a bit too short at 54mins but it was throughly enjoyable and whetted my appetite for more Ring things!

So now that you've seen it, here is the review of it I put on Amazon.  (I didn't want to influence you beforehand!)

Glad you liked it, and I totally agree that it is too short!

I read those reviews a while ago but didn't realise one of them was yours;well written and I've added a 'helpful' vote ;)

Heres a question:

Why were the punters running into the theatre when the doors opened? I presume they already had bought tickets so what was the rush? Old ladies and all!

It looked like a great production which I'd love to see on dvd.

I can't recall!  There may have been some "open seating" standing room tickets?  Or else people were just over-eager in their "Ring mania."

PS, I asked in "What are you listening to?" but...how was Three Places in New England?
