My five favorite Mozart works are always the latest five Mozart works I've listened to.

An excellent point. Excluding operas, this week's list of mine would look like this:

Piano Concerto No. 24
Requiem
Great Mass in C minor
"Haffner" & "Prager" Symphonies

Mozart is one of those composers, I haven´t heard a single work of, which I did not like / love / adore.

Je suis jeune, il est vrai, mais aux âmes bien nées,
La valeur n'attend point le nombre des années.

+1+1+1......
Today, I also litterally worship Mozart.  Even silly tunes like "A vous dirai-je Maman" sound grand in Mozart hands.
Younger, my views were somewhat different.

I am not sure my music training (I played Cello mostly in an amateur quartet for 15 years) helps me today.  Somehow, it more the readings and listening I am doing today that make me progress.

Undersranding musical forms, their histories are essential to fully appreciate recorded interpretations.

Those variations are fantastic. But even more spellbinding are those on "La belle Françoise", K.353/300f. It´s just the other week that I have heard them for the first time and I was floored. To take a trite (even --- as you aptly put it --- silly) tune and turn it into the stuff of life and death is really and undoubtedly the work of a genius.

I was blessed enough at 14: Mozart was a coup de foudre. IIRC, it´s either the Eine Kleine Nacht Musik or the 20th Piano Concerto that did the trick --- quite possibly both.

Helpful, by all means, yes. Essential, I think not.

Don Giovanni
PC 20
Symphony 38
Requiem
String quartet 15

I seem to really like D minor works of his...

"Javert, though frightful, had nothing ignoble about him. Probity, sincerity, candor, conviction, the sense of duty, are things which may become hideous when wrongly directed; but which, even when hideous, remain grand."

There's something about the third movement of the piano trio in Bb k. 502 third movement that i don't understand. I'm fascinated by it, I've had it in my head for days now, especially the section in this clip. But the rational part of me doesn't find a reason to be so enthused, it doesn't seem particularly unique, the themes aren't so interested. It's still playing in my head though.  $:)

In order, ish
Since at some point this got expanded so that you could include as many of your top Mozart works as you wanted:

String Quintet No. 3 C major (K515)
String Quintet No. 4 G minor (K516)
Piano Concerto No. 27 Bb major (K595)
Violin Sonata No. 21 E minor (K304)
Piano Concerto No. 17 G major (K453)
Symphony No. 38 D major (K504)
Clarinet Concerto A major (K622)
Piano Concerto No. 22 Eb major (K482)
Piano Concerto No. 15 Bb major (K450)
Sinfonia Concertante Eb major (K364)
Symphony No. 40 G minor (K550)
String Quartet No. 23 F major (K590)
Piano Sonata No. 18 D major (K576)
Piano Concerto No. 9 Eb major (K271)
Piano Quintet Eb major (K452)
Divertimento Eb major (K563)
Requiem D minor (K626)
Piano Concerto No. 25 C major (K503)
String Quartet No. 14 G major (K387)
Le nozze di Figaro (K.... something)
Gran Partita (K361)
Don Giovanni (K something else)
Fantasy C minor (K475)
Piano Concerto No. 24 C minor (K491)
Piano Concerto No. 23 A major (K488)
Così fan tutte (K.... whatever)
Piano Concerto No. 21 C major (K467)
Symphony No. 39 Eb major (K543)
Symphony No. 41 C major (K551)
String Quartet No. 19 C major (K465)
Adagio B minor (K540)
String Quintet No. 5 D major (K593)
Rondo D major (K485)
Clarinet Quintet A major (K581)
Violin Sonata No. 27 G major (K379)
Piano Concerto No. 20 D minor (K466)
Zauberflöte K something
Flute & Harp Concerto (K299)
Piano Concerto No. 18 Bb major (K456)

Roughly in order.

That's my small selection of essentials for the island anyway. Beyond that there aren't any works that come to mind straightaway as favourites, so I guess K456 is my cutoff point for when a Mozart work becomes notable enough for me to really like it.

K515 has displaced K516 as my favourite Mozart work overall I think largely because of how amazing the first movement is and how much I've come to appreciate the second movement after finding it a letdown for so long.

ComposerOfAvantGarde

I would have to spend a lot of time to work out my top 39.................it is easier to simply state five pieces I really like and then a few hours later mention five completely different ones.

So here are five I love right now

String Quartet in G major K387
Piano Concerto no. 22
Die Zauberflöte
Piano Sonata in B flat major K570
Requiem

SymphonicAddict

While I'm not a big fan of Mozart, I do like many of his works.

Symphony no. 39
Clarinet quintet
Piano concerto no. 21
Clarinet concerto
Great Mass in C minor (much better than the Requiem IMHO)
