Howdy there Wieland. Greetings from Beethoven's Vienna. Welcome to the forum.  8)

Beethoven?  A civilized man! Some time pick up the late quartets by the Guarneri Quartet - the original recordings from the Sixties, not the second set they recorded later. As you listen, you will experience ...... um, whatever's really good in Stuttgart.

When, a few months before his death, Rachmaninov lamented that he no longer had the "strength and fire" to compose, friends reminded him of the Symphonic Dances, so charged with fire and strength. "Yes," he admitted. "I don't know how that happened. That was probably my last flicker."

Well, the Guarneri Quartet Beethoven I do own, the early set, on Vinyl. All 16. I actually own all Guarneri recordings of that period. When I was living in NYC in the late 80s, I had the chance to hear them live more than once. Wonderful group. A few years ago, on their final tour, they came to Stuttgart, so of course I went to hear them. I met a women who told me that she took her whole class of viola students to the concert because the always dreamed of studying with Michael Tree, but somehow it did not work out. I also read and liked the book by Arnold Steinhardt.

I have the Sixties recordings of the late quartets on vinyl in a very nice RCA boxed set.  For many, this is the standard!

Lisztianwagner

Willkommen auf GMG, Wieland!
Great to see Ravel, Debussy, Mahler, Janacek and Sibelius among your favourites, they are some of my favourite composers too. I'm also glad you like Melartin, who composed wonderful symphonies. What about Richard Wagner, if I may ask?

You may. My favourite opera (of all) is Parsifal. And Holländer, Tannhäuser, Meistersinger, Walküre, Rheingold and Götterdämmerung follow close. I also like Liszt, e.g. some of his tone poems, the Faust Symphonie and a number of piano pieces especially the h-moll sonata which is  one of my favourite sonatas at all.
